上堂，舉：「洞山與密師伯同到柏巖，巖問：『二上座甚處來？』山云：『湖南來。』巖云：『觀察使姓什麼？』山云：『不委姓。』巖云：『名什麼？』山云：『不委名。』巖云：『還理事也無？』山云：『自有廊幕在。』巖云：『還出入也無？』山云：『不出入。』巖云：『豈不出入？』山拂袖便行。巖次日侵早入堂，召二上座近前云：『昨日問上座，不愜老僧意，一夜不安。今請上座別下一轉語，若愜老僧意，便開粥相伴過夏。』山云：『却請和尚問。』巖云：『豈不出入？』山云：『太尊貴生。』巖乃開粥，同過夏。」師云：「明投暗合，八面玲瓏，不犯當頭，轉身有路，曹洞門下足可觀光；若是臨濟兒孫，棒折也未放在。當時見他道不委姓，劈胸便與一拳。這裏挨得身轉，非但開粥相待，亦可明窓下安排。有麼有麼？」喝一喝云：「漆桶，參堂去。」

Yan said: 'What is the surname of the Surveillance Commissioner?' Shan said: 'I do not know his surname.' Yan said: 'What is his given name?' Shan said: 'I do not know his name.' Yan said: 'Does he still manage affairs?' Shan said: 'He has his staff officers.' Yan said: 'Does he still go out and come in?' Shan said: 'He does not go out or come in.' Yan said: 'How could he not go out or come in?' Shan flicked his sleeves and left. Early the next morning, Yan entered the hall, called the two senior monks forward, and said: 'Yesterday's questioning of the senior monk did not satisfy this old monk's intention; I was uneasy all night. Today I ask the senior monk to provide another turning phrase. If it satisfies this old monk's intention, I will start serving gruel and accompany you through the summer.' Shan said: 'Please ask again, Venerable Sir.' Yan said: 'How could he not go out or come in?' Shan said: 'Much too noble!' Yan then started serving gruel, and they passed the summer together." The Master said: "Meeting in the open and matching in the dark, eight-sided lucidity, not offending the main point, with room to turn around—under Caodong's gate, this is well worth admiring. But if it were a descendant of Linji, even breaking the staff would not suffice. At that time, seeing him say 'I do not know his surname,' I would have given him a punch to the chest. If he could turn his body around here, not only would I serve gruel and receive him, but he could also be accommodated under the bright window. Is there anyone? Is there anyone?" Giving a shout, he said: "Lacquer buckets, go investigate in the hall!"
