Qiyu was styled Huijue. At first he established a Pure Land association at Baozang in Zhachuan, where those recollecting the Buddha were as numerous as ants. Later he resided at Shangzhu, where at midnight he would carry a statue of Amitābha on his head, walking the path and recollecting the Buddha. One day he said to the head monk: "The Prabhūtaratna Stūpa has appeared before my bed; this is not my wish. What I desire to see is Amitābha Buddha. Please assemble the monks to recollect the Buddha for me." The head monk struck the bell and engaged in mindfulness with nearly one hundred monks. After a short while, [Qiyu] said: "Now I have seen the Buddha." He then closed his eyes, sat upright, and passed away.
