The Dharma Master of Huiyin Monastery on the Southern Mountain of Hangzhou was named Jingyuan. He was born into the Yang clan of Jinjiang. Because his ancestors were from Jinshui in Quanzhou, scholars referred to the master as "Jinshui." Having received full ordination and traveled for spiritual training, he received the Huayan teachings from Chengqian of Mount Wutai, studied the Helun under Mingtan of Henghai, and upon returning south listened to the Śūraṅgama-sūtra, Awakening of Faith, and Perfect Enlightenment Sūtra under Dharma Master Zixuan of Changshui. Venerable scholars from all four quarters lauded him as a "dragon of doctrine." On an occasion when he went to Quanzhou to visit his parents, the Prefect of Quanzhou invited him to reside at Qingliang. Traveling again to Wu, he resided at Bao'en and Guanyin. Prefect of Hangzhou Shen Wentong established the Xianshou Cloister at Xiangfu Monastery to welcome him. Later, he moved to the Miyin Treasure Pavilion at Qingzhen in Xiuzhou, and then moved to Shanzhu at Puzhao in Huating. Left Assistant Director of the Department of State Affairs Pu Zongmeng governed Hangzhou, and pitying his painstaking devotion to the school, memorialized the court to assign Huiyin Monastery for the master's residence. When Supreme Clerical Director Ŭich'ŏn of Koryŏ arrived, he paid his respects to the master with the rites of a disciple. Formerly, the commentaries and subcommentaries of the Huayan school had long been scattered and lost, but because Ŭich'ŏn brought them to seek resolution of questions, what was lost was recovered. When Ŭich'ŏn returned to his country, he dispatched an envoy from Koryŏ to present the master with gold-inscribed versions of the three translations of the Huayan-sūtra in one hundred eighty fascicles. A great pavilion was built to enshrine them, which is why popular custom refers to Huiyin as Koryŏ Monastery. Coming to this point, on the jiyou day of the eleventh month in the third year of Yuanyou, the master entered extinction at the age of seventy-eight. His relics were enshrined in a pagoda at the northwest corner of the monastery. His school hailed him as the Patriarch of the Revival. Grand Commandant Lü Huiqing, courtesy name Jifu, erected a stele of his conduct and career and also composed the Huayan ge ji. Jiang Zhiqi erected the stone (Benzhuan). The Huayan-sūtra (Jin translation in sixty fascicles; Tang translation in eighty fascicles; Tang further translation of the later portion in forty fascicles).
