An imperial decree bestowed an auspicious title upon Chan Master Pu'an. The edict stated: "Imperial edict of the Emperor, favored by the mandate of Heaven: We have heard that the Buddhist school takes emptiness and quiescence as its essential principle; would those who follow its practice ever desire to establish fame and distinctive titles to display to all under Heaven and later generations? Yet if the state does not do so, it has no means to manifest its intent of honoring virtue and delighting in the Way. Ever since Our accession, We have heard that Chan Master Pu'an Jigan Miaoji Zhenjue Zhaokuang Dade Huiai of Cihua Chan Monastery on Mount Nanquan in the Circuit of Yuanzhou succeeded to the lineage of Linji and transcended the realm of the Avataṃsaka. His virtue reflects upon the contemporary age and his bounty covers future generations. His Dao is exceedingly honored and illustrious, and We have secretly admired him in Our heart. Since great posthumous titles have repeatedly been bestowed, only the name of his stupa is not yet commensurate. He may be granted the Stupa of Dingguang, named 'Stupa of the Efficacious and Auspicious Dingguang', and so forth."
