When Emperor Hui of the Jin fled west, the Guanzhong region fell into turmoil and the common folk were displaced; Dharmarakṣa and his disciples fled the turmoil and journeyed eastwards. Reaching Mianchi, he fell ill and died, at the age of seventy-eight. Later, Sun Chuo composed the Daoxian lun (Treatise on the Men of the Way and the Wise), matching seven Tianzhu monks to the Seven Sages of the Bamboo Grove, and compared Dharmarakṣa to Shan Juyuan. The treatise states: 'Master Dharmarakṣa in virtue ranked as the chief among beings, while Juyuan in rank rose to discourse upon the Way; the lofty character and virtue of the two masters are well worthy of peers.' Such was the praise he received in later generations.
