Further, going north from this city across mountains for more than six hundred li, one reaches the country of Uḍḍiyāna, which is a principal kingdom of North India. Five li east of the royal capital, there is a great stupa with many auspicious omens. It is the place where the Buddha in the past, as the Ṛṣi of Patience (Kṣāntivādin), was dismembered limb by limb by King Kali. There is also a square stone upon which the Buddha's footprints emit light illuminating the monastery, the place where he preached Jātaka tales for devas. There is also the place where the Buddha in the past, upon hearing the Dharma, broke his bone to write out the sūtra; the place where King Śibi formerly cut his own flesh to ransom a dove; and the place where the Buddha in the past, as King Maitrībala, pierced his body to feed his blood to five yakṣas. In a great monastery, there is also a carved wooden statue of the Bodhisattva Maitreya, brightly shining with golden light and over one hundred feet tall. It was made by the Arhat Madhyāntika. The Arhat used his supernatural power to lead a craftsman up to Tuṣita Heaven; only after three journeys to observe the marks was its beauty completed. It has great numinous signs that cannot be described in full.
