Zheng's commentary on the *Liji* states: 'The word 酬 is equivalent to *zhōu* (周), referring to loyalty and trustworthiness being comprehensive.' The *Shuowen jiezi* states: 'To offer; it is classified under the radical *yǒu* (wine vessel) with *zhōu* (州) phonetic.' In ancient script it was also written as 醻.
