Small and large bamboos: 篠 [xiao] (upper character: 霄 + 了 fanqie); 簜 [dang] (lower character: 黨 + 朗 fanqie. Kong [Anguo's] commentary on the Shangshu says: "'Xiao' is small bamboo; 'dang' is large bamboo; once the floodwaters receded, they sprouted everywhere." The Shuowen jiezi says: "Dang can be made into pole handles; xiao can be made into arrows. Both derive from radical 竹 'bamboo', with 攸 and 湯 as phonetics." The Kaosheng notes that the correct form of 篠 is 筱).
