搢紳（上津信反鄭注禮記云搢猶插也注周禮云搢謂插笏於紳帶之間若帶劒也下尖真反考聲云紳大帶也廣雅云紳猶束也論語云子張書諸紳說文云從糸申聲也）。

搢紳 (The first character has the fanqie 津信 [jīn + xìn]. Zheng [Xuan's] commentary on the Liji states: '搢 is like 插 [to insert].' The commentary on the Zhouli states: '搢 means inserting the tablet between the broad sash, like wearing a sword.' The second character has the fanqie 尖真 [jiān + zhēn]. The Kaosheng states: '紳 is a broad sash.' The Guangya states: '紳 is like 束 [to bind].' The Lunyu states: 'Zizhang wrote [these words] upon his sash.' The Shuowen jiezi states: 'Derived from 糸 [silk] with 申 as phonetic.').
