Sūtra: Past mind [...] cannot be apprehended. The Exposition says: The fourth [section] explains this. The treatise says: "'Past mind cannot be apprehended' because it has ceased. The future is because it does not yet exist. The present is because of ultimate truth." That treatise is largely the same, yet it says: "The present mind cannot be apprehended because of false discrimination. This demonstrates the inversion of mental abiding and that the consciousnesses are false because they lack temporal contemplation." In this treatise, the present [mind] is truly free from discrimination; in that treatise, the present [mind] falsely has discrimination—both cannot be apprehended. "Lacking temporal contemplation" means that because that false mind does not have the dharmas of the three times as its objective support of contemplation, the grasping consciousness becomes of a false nature. The new treatise says: "This reveals that the transmigrating mind is of the nature of false consciousness, because its objective support has no nature of the three times." The Exposition says: It is not only that mind cannot be apprehended in the three times; its objects of the three times also cannot be apprehended.
