時維摩詰來入會中謂我言。長者子。夫大施會不當如汝所設　此三廣引彈事文六。一彈呵。二請說。三略說。四重請。五廣說。六得益。此初彈也。肇曰。天竺大施會法於父舍開四門。立高幢告天下。諸有所須皆詣其舍於七日中傾家而施以求梵福時。淨名以其俗施既滿將進以法施故先譏其所設。以明為施之殊也。

"At that time, Vimalakīrti entered the gathering and said to me, 'Elder's son, a great gathering for giving should not be set up as you have done.'" This third [part] broadly cites the incident of reproach. The text has six [parts]: first, reproach; second, requesting him to speak; third, a brief explanation; fourth, repeating the request; fifth, extensive explanation; sixth, obtaining benefit. This is the first, reproach. Zhao says: "The Indian practice for a great gathering for giving is to open the four gates at one's father's house, raise high banners, and announce to the world: 'All who have needs, come to this house.' Over seven days, one empties the house in giving to seek Brahmā blessings. At that time, since his worldly giving was complete, Jingming intended to advance him with the gift of the Dharma, so he first reproached what he had arranged in order to clarify the distinction between [types of] giving."
