"If a bhikṣu says to another bhikṣu, 'Venerable, let us go together to the village, and I will give you food,' and that bhikṣu in the end does not have food given to this bhikṣu, saying to him, 'It is not pleasing to me to sit together or talk together with you in one place; I prefer to sit alone and talk alone'—if, for this reason and no other, he drives him away by expedient means, it is a prāyaścittika." The complete text of this precept contains three clauses: first, the offender; second, from "says to another" down to "will give you food," which directly explains taking him to the village and promising to give him food; third, from "that bhikṣu in the end does not" onward, which explains not giving him food and driving him away, establishing the offense. "For this reason" refers to the reason of troubling and distressing him. "No other" means no other condition of non-offense, such as the above-mentioned lack of deportment. In defining the marks, the first clause is understood. Regarding "village": there are four kinds of villages as explained above. Regarding "giving food": this refers to the five standard foods. The Vinaya says, "If by expedient means he leaves the place of sight and goes to a place of hearing, he commits a duṣkṛta; doing the reverse is also a duṣkṛta; leaving both sight and hearing constitutes a prāyaścittika." The Vinaya says regarding non-offenses: "If he drives him away after giving him food; or if the other is sick, or lacks deportment so that people are displeased to see him, and he himself delivers food to him; or on account of breaking the precepts, breaking views, and so forth; or if there is danger to life or brahmacarya; or if he has neither anger nor resentment, none of these is an offense."
