"making an offering of my body, I intend to set up the lamp of great gnosis in the dark house of yourselves and all sentient beings, illuminate the darkness of ignorance in the cycle of birth and death, cut the knots of fully intertwined afflictions, deliver [beings] from the faults of saṃsāra, and establish them in the state of nirvāṇa. Therefore, do not create obstacles or hindrances!" When the queens heard him command this, they were struck dumb as if choking; they wept aloud and tore out their hair. "We have no merit; through misfortune, our lord is leaving us while still alive!" they cried. The king had five hundred princes, all handsome and lovely to behold, intelligent and gifted with wise intellects, endowed completely with the marks of great men. The king cherished and loved them like his own eyes. Then the king said to the princes, "I now intend to perform an act of offering, and fearing that my body and life will be imperiled, I expect to be separated from you. Manage the kingdom's governance and the affairs of the subjects according to seniority!" When the princes heard this command, they were tormented with suffering as if their limbs and veins were being severed. Just as a person choking can neither vomit nor swallow, they pleaded to the king: "Why do you abandon us and leave us without refuge?" Some embraced the king by his neck, while others grasped his hands and feet, weeping aloud and lamenting: "Alas, alas! Why will we be left without protector and refuge?" Then the king, in order to encourage the princes, instructed them: "In this world, all that is beloved and dear will in the end be separated." [The princes replied,] "Although we hear this command, our hearts ache and we cannot bear to part from you. Please grant us one request: we offer our bodies and lives to the king; please make an offering [of our bodies] to the great teacher brāhmaṇa!"
