[…] become [king]! I will become the new Buddha!" King Ajātaśatru said, "Presently my father the king is still living, so that is not right." Devadatta said, "It is right to do away with him! I too shall do away with the Buddha, and after that, when a new king and a new Buddha bring benefit to sentient beings, will it not be delightful?" Then King Ajātaśatru, just as Devadatta had said, murdered his father the king and took possession of the realm of Rājagṛha and Vārāṇasī. Devadatta said to King Ajātaśatru, "I too shall do away with the Tathāgata." Ajātaśatru said, "The Tathāgata possesses the power of great miracles and knows the thoughts in the minds of others; how could you do away with him? Moreover, the Tathāgata has great attendants such as Śāriputra, Mahāmaudgalyāyana, Aniruddha, and the others, so it is impossible." Devadatta said to King Ajātaśatru, "King, you must assist me!" The king asked, "What do you intend to do?" Devadatta replied, "Great King, issue an edict throughout the country that no one whomsoever is to give robes, food, drink, or alms to the bhikṣus!" Then King Ajātaśatru also issued an edict: "If anyone gives robes, food, or alms to the bhikṣus, their limbs will be cut off!" At that time, the Bhagavān, accompanied by his great assembly of the bhikṣu saṅgha, went out from Gṛdhrakūṭa to beg for alms, but found nothing at all. In that way, from one day up to seven days, they found nothing at all, so great disciples such as Śāriputra went to other regions by the power of miracles to seek robes, food, and alms. At that time, Devadatta spoke as follows to King Ajātaśatru: "Presently not even one great disciple of the Buddha is here; the Tathāgata dwells alone. Therefore, King, send an invitation to the Tathāgata
