having recovered and become at ease, they resolved: “In order to repay the Buddha's kindness, we arouse the mind toward unsurpassed and completely perfect awakening!” and in unison they took the vow: “May those ordinary beings who have not found happiness find happiness! May those not liberated be liberated! May those who have not crossed over cross over! May those who have not attained the fruit attain the fruit!” Furthermore, the Tathāgata’s great compassion and miraculous power of skill in means are inconceivable. Once, when the Buddha was residing in Śrāvastī, five hundred bandits lived in a mountain ravine, attacking travelers and committing unrighteous deeds. At that time, through the power of skill in means, the Tathāgata emanated as a man riding a fine, woolly elephant. His body was clothed in garments, and he carried a bow, arrows, and weapons. The woolly elephant was adorned with the seven kinds of precious jewels, and his own body was also adorned with the seven kinds of precious jewels. He went alone along the side of the mountain ravine where the bandits dwelled. At that time, seeing such a man approaching from afar, the five hundred bandits said to one another, “Though we have been bandits for many years, we have never seen anything like this!” Then, their chief asked them, “What do you see?” They replied, “There is a solitary man riding a fine, woolly elephant approaching. The man’s clothes and ornaments are made of the seven kinds of precious jewels, and the woolly elephant is also adorned with the seven kinds of precious jewels. Radiating light across heaven and earth, he is coming directly down the path. If we could strike and capture this man, we would have wealth sufficient for seven generations!” Hearing these words, the chief of the bandits rejoiced greatly and held counsel: “Let us sneak quietly toward him, and when we are near, let us all shoot our arrows and capture him!” Then the five hundred bandits approached him, simultaneously raised a cry, and shouted aloud.
