there are many obscurations, they are unable to give and are attached and clinging, they are beset by countless defiled karmas, their understanding is meager and they are attached, they are lazy and have great pride, they cannot become the cause of awakening with this very body and cannot obtain the thirty-two marks, while wandering in saṃsāra they cannot gather many beings through the ten virtuous dharmas as the supreme fruit of a cakravartin king, and they cannot obtain the unsurpassed state of a Brahmā king nor encourage the turning of the wheel of the sublime Dharma for the benefit and happiness of all sentient beings. For these reasons, the Tathāgata did not permit women to be disciples who enter the Dharma. On behalf of all women, I requested the Tathāgata again and again, up to three times, to let us enter the Buddha's Dharma, but he did not permit it. When he did not permit it even after I had requested up to three times, and my wish was not fulfilled, I was overcome by unhappy grief. With eyes filled with tears, I came out and walked on. Then Ānanda spoke to me thus: "Mother, do not be unhappy. I shall request the Tathāgata so that you, Mother, may enter the Buddha's teaching." Thereupon, I instantly became joyful. Then Ānanda went to where the Buddha was, and having arrived, he addressed him thus: "Bhagavān, if you grant me an opportunity to make an inquiry and request,
