nor did I inform my companions. Because I did not speak of it, your bodies and lives were kept safe." When the bandits heard him say this, they thought: "Our bodies and lives have just now been spared!" Having thought so, they pressed their palms together toward the brāhmaṇa youth and said: "Great being, excellent, most excellent! Possessor of great compassion, please instruct us as to whatever we should do from this day forward!" The brāhmaṇa youth said: "Quickly arouse your minds toward unsurpassed awakening!" Then the bandits too, in order to repay his kindness, immediately aroused their minds toward unsurpassed and completely perfect awakening. The Bhagavān addressed Ānanda: "Bodhisattvas who abide in diligence, who fully adorn awakening, and who wish to repay the kindness of the Buddha must constantly arouse the perception of and be mindful of all sentient beings just like an only child. Noble son, you should understand it thus: do not think that the brāhmaṇa youth of that time was someone else. Do not view it that way. He who was the brāhmaṇa youth at that time is none other than myself today. Through that cause and condition, I bypassed ninety eons of saṃsāra and swiftly became fully awakened in unsurpassed and completely perfect awakening. Furthermore, the way a bodhisattva practices great skill in means, recognizes kindness, and repays kindness is like this: Once, when the Buddha Bhagavān was residing in the Bamboo Grove, a bhikṣu was stricken with the illness of boils on his body. Because pus and blood continuously oozed from his entire body, everyone was repulsed by him and placed him outside the monastery inside a dilapidated, discarded dwelling. At that time, through his miraculous powers, the Tathāgata blessed the assembly so that not a single member of the vast retinue was aware, and the Tathāgata went alone into the presence of that sick bhikṣu.
