"How many kinds of action (karaṇa), Venerable Sir, have been expounded?"
"Gautama, four kinds of action have been expounded, namely: mental action, vocal action, bodily action, and karmic action."
"For the inhabitants of hell, Venerable Sir, how many kinds of action have been expounded?"
"Gautama, four kinds have been expounded, namely: mental action, vocal action, bodily action, and karmic action. In this way, four kinds of action have been expounded for all five-sensed beings. For one-sensed beings, two kinds: bodily action and karmic action. For deficient-sensed beings, three kinds: vocal action, bodily action, and karmic action."
"Venerable Sir, do the inhabitants of hell experience unpleasant feeling through action, or do they experience unpleasant feeling through inaction?"
"Gautama, the inhabitants of hell experience unpleasant feeling through action, not through inaction."
"For what reason?"
"Gautama, four kinds of action are expounded for the inhabitants of hell, namely: mental action, vocal action, bodily action, and karmic action. Through these four kinds of inauspicious action, the inhabitants of hell experience unpleasant feeling through action, not through inaction. That is the reason."
"Do the Asurakumāras [experience pleasant feeling] through action, or through inaction?"
"Gautama, through action, not through inaction."
"For what reason?"
"Gautama, four kinds of action are expounded for the Asurakumāras, namely: mental action, vocal action, bodily action, and karmic action. Through these auspicious actions, the Asurakumāras experience pleasant feeling through action, not through inaction.
Thus up to the Stanitakumāras.
For earth-bodied beings, the question is the same, with the exception that: through these auspicious and inauspicious actions, earth-bodied beings experience mixed feeling through action, not through inaction.
All beings with physical bodies (audārika-śarīra) [experience feeling] of mixed intensity through auspicious and inauspicious [action]. The gods [experience] pleasant [feeling] through auspicious [action]."
