Then the Venerable Gautama, knowing that the homeless ascetic Jamāli had passed away, approached the Śramaṇa, the Lord Mahāvīra. Having approached, he paid homage and obeisance to the Śramaṇa, the Lord Mahāvīra, and having paid homage and obeisance, spoke thus: “Truly, the bad disciple of the Beloved of the Gods named the homeless ascetic Jamāli—where, Venerable Sir, having died at the appointed time of death, has that homeless ascetic Jamāli gone? Where has he been reborn?”
Addressing him with “O Gautama!”, the Śramaṇa, the Lord Mahāvīra spoke thus to the Venerable Gautama: “Truly, Gautama, my bad disciple named the homeless ascetic Jamāli, at that time, while I was thus explaining, thus speaking, thus expounding, and thus propounding, did not believe, did not trust, and did not accept this matter. Disbelieving, mistrusting, and not accepting this matter, he departed a second time from my presence on his own. Having departed, misleading and perverting himself, others, and both through many fabrications of non-existent things and obstinate clingings to false views, having fulfilled the ascetic course of life for many years, having emaciated himself with a half-month mortification, and having cut off thirty meals by fasting, without having confessed and repented of that transgression, having died at the appointed time of death, he was reborn as a kilbiṣika deity among the devakilbiṣika deities with a lifespan duration of thirteen sāgaropamas in the Lāntaka heaven.”

“Venerable Sir, how many kinds of kilbiṣika deities are stated?”
“Gautama, three kinds of kilbiṣika deities are stated, namely: those with a lifespan duration of three palyopamas, those with a lifespan duration of three sāgaropamas, and those with a lifespan duration of thirteen sāgaropamas.”
“Where, Venerable Sir, do the kilbiṣika deities with a lifespan duration of three palyopamas reside?”
“Gautama, above the Jyotiṣkas [and] below the Saudharma and Īśāna heavens; there the kilbiṣika deities with a lifespan duration of three palyopamas reside.”
“Where, Venerable Sir, do the kilbiṣika deities with a lifespan duration of three sāgaropamas reside?”
“Gautama, above the Saudharma and Īśāna heavens [and] below the Sanatkumāra and Māhendra heavens; there the kilbiṣika deities with a lifespan duration of three sāgaropamas reside.”
“Where, Venerable Sir, do the kilbiṣika deities with a lifespan duration of thirteen sāgaropamas reside?”
“Gautama, above the Brahmaloka heaven [and] below the Lāntaka heaven; there the kilbiṣika deities with a lifespan duration of thirteen sāgaropamas reside.”
“Venerable Sir, through what karma-undertakings do they come to be reborn as kilbiṣika deities?”
“Gautama, those jīvas who are hostile to their ācārya, hostile to their upādhyāya, hostile to their kula, hostile to their gaṇa, hostile to their saṅgha; who cause disrepute, dispraise, and dishonor to their ācāryas and upādhyāyas; who, through the proclamation of many untruths and dogmatic attachments to falsehood, lead astray and corrupt themselves, others, and both; and having observed the mendicant conduct for many years, die at the time of death without having repented of and expiated that offense—they are reborn as kilbiṣika deities among one or other of the kilbiṣika deities, namely: among those with a lifespan duration of three palyopamas, or among those with a lifespan duration of three sāgaropamas, or among those with a lifespan duration of thirteen sāgaropamas.”
“Venerable Sir, when the kilbiṣika deities immediately fall from that realm of the gods upon the exhaustion of lifespan, the exhaustion of rebirth, and the exhaustion of duration, where do they go? Where are they reborn?”
“Gautama, wandering through saṃsāra for up to four or five births among inhabitants of hell, animals, humans, and gods, thereafter they attain perfection, become enlightened, are liberated, become completely unconditioned, and make an end to all suffering; while some wander through the beginningless, endless, long path of the fourfold wilderness of saṃsāra.”
“Venerable Sir, was Jamāli the homeless ascetic one who consumed tasteless food, insipid food, poor food, coarse food, dry food, and meager food; living on tasteless, insipid, poor, coarse, dry, and meager food; living peacefully, living serenely, and living in solitude?”
“Yes, Gautama, Jamāli the homeless ascetic was one who consumed tasteless food, insipid food, up to living in solitude.”
“If, Venerable Sir, Jamāli the homeless ascetic was one who consumed tasteless food, insipid food, up to living in solitude, why, Venerable Sir, did Jamāli the homeless ascetic, dying at the time of death, take birth as a kilbiṣika deity among the kilbiṣika deities with a lifespan duration of thirteen sāgaropamas in the Lāntaka heaven?”
“Gautama, Jamāli the homeless ascetic was hostile to his ācārya, hostile to his upādhyāya; causing disrepute, dispraise, and dishonor to his ācārya and upādhyāya; leading astray and corrupting himself, others, and both through the proclamation of many untruths and dogmatic attachments to falsehood; and although having observed the mendicant conduct for many years, cutting off thirty meals by a half-month mortification through fasting, yet dying at the time of death without having repented of and expiated that offense, he took birth as a kilbiṣika deity among the kilbiṣika deities with a lifespan duration of thirteen sāgaropamas in the Lāntaka heaven.”
