/0 śrī-śuka uvāca
ity udīritam ākarṇya devaṛṣer uddhavo 'bravīt /
sabhyānāṃ matam ājñāya kṛṣṇasya ca mahā-matiḥ //
Śrī Śuka said:
Having heard what the divine sage said, the wise Uddhava spoke,
knowing the mind of the assembly and of Kṛṣṇa.
1. Sri Suka said:— Having heard the news thus delivered by the divine sage, Uddhava of great judgment considered the opinions of the courtiers and of Krishna and said:
10.71.2
/0 śrī-uddhava uvāca
yad uktam ṛṣinā deva sācivyaṃ yakṣyatas tvayā /
kāryaṃ paitṛ-ṣvasreyasya rakṣā ca śaraṇaiṣiṇām //
Śrī Uddhava said:
As the sage has stated, O Lord, assistance is to be rendered by you
to the son of your father's sister who wishes to sacrifice, and protection to those who seek refuge.
2. Uddhava said:— As the sage says, O Lord, Thou shouldst help Thy aunt’s son who desires to perform the great sacrifice and protect those that seek Thy shelter.
10.71.3
yaṣṭavyam rājasūyena dik-cakra-jayinā vibho /
ato jarā-suta-jaya ubhayārtho mato mama //
The Rājasūya sacrifice should be performed by a conqueror of the circle of the quarters, O Lord;
therefore the defeat of the son of Jarā accomplishes both purposes, in my opinion.
3. (For) O Lord, only the king who is victorious in all the cardinal points may perform Rajasuya (1. First we should leave this for Indraprastha and there with his permission and for his purpose Thou mayest put down Magadha); therefore the vanquishing of Jarasandha is in my opinion of double advantage.
10.71.4
asmākaṃ ca mahān artho hy etenaiva bhaviṣyati /
yaśaś ca tava govinda rājño baddhān vimuñcataḥ //
And by this very means a great benefit will accrue to us,
as well as glory to you, Govinda, in freeing the imprisoned kings.
4. Great will be the advantage to us by taking this step; it will be for Thy glory, O Govinda, to set the imprisoned princes at liberty.
10.71.5
sa vai durviṣaho rājā nāgāyuta-samo bale /
balinām api cānyeṣāṃ bhīmaṃ sama-balaṃ vinā //
That king is indeed invincible, equal in strength to ten thousand elephants,
even among other strong men, except for Bhīma, who is his equal in power.
5. Indeed that king of Magadhas equal in strength to ten thousand elephants is irresistible for all others famous for their strength, except Bhimasena who is his equal in strength (V. of formidable strength).
10.71.6
dvai-rathe sa tu jetavyo mā śatākṣauhiṇī-yutaḥ /
brāhmaṇyo 'bhyarthito viprair na pratyākhyāti karhicit //
He must be conquered in single combat, not when accompanied by a hundred akṣauhiṇīs.
He is devoted to brahmins, and when solicited by brahmins he never refuses.
6. He is to be vanquished only in a single combat but not when he goes with his hundred Akshauhinis; he is devoted to Brahmins and when they make a request he would never refuse it.
10.71.7
brahma-veṣa-dharo gatvā taṃ bhikṣeta vṛkodaraḥ /
haniṣyati na sandeho dvai-rathe tava sannidhau //
Let Vṛkodara go disguised as a brahmin and beg of him;
he will kill him, without doubt, in single combat in your presence.
7. Therefore let Bhima go in the guise of a brahmin and make his request; and he will no doubt in Thy presence surely kill him (Jarasandha) in the combat.
10.71.8
nimittaṃ param īśasya viśva-sarga-nirodhayoḥ /
hiraṇyagarbhaḥ śarvaś ca kālasyārūpiṇas tava //
Hiraṇyagarbha and Śarva are merely the instrumental causes of the supreme Lord,
for the creation and destruction of the universe, of you who are formless Time.
8. Bhima is only an instrument of Thy Almighty self, the formless, all-destroying Time, just as the four-faced Brahma and Rudra are in creating and destroying the world.
10.71.8.p1
gāyanti te viśada-karma gṛheṣu devyo $ rājñāṃ sva-śatru-vadham ātma-vimokṣaṇaṃ ca &
The queens sing in their homes of your immaculate deeds,
the slaying of their enemies and the liberation of the kings,
9. The queens of those kings would in their houses sing of Thy glorious act in the destruction of their enemy and of their release, just as gopis sing of Thy acts now and as the sages and ourselves under Thy protection sing of the rescue of Gajendra and Sita and Thine own parents, Vasudeva and Devaki.
10.71.9
gopyaś ca kuñjara-pater janakātmajāyāḥ % pitroś ca labdha-śaraṇā munayo vayaṃ ca //
as do the cowherd women, and those of the lord of elephants, of the daughter of Janaka,
of your parents, and we and the sages who have found refuge in you.
10.71.10
jarāsandha-vadhaḥ kṛṣṇa bhūry-arthāyopakalpate /
prāyaḥ pāka-vipākena tava cābhimataḥ kratuḥ //
The slaying of Jarāsandha, O Kṛṣṇa, will serve abundant purposes,
and through the maturity of fate the sacrifice is also desired by you.
10. Thus the destruction of Jarasandha tends to many a great purpose and may mostly meet with Thy approval on the fructification of the Karma of Jarasandha and those kings, and further the sacrifice is liked by Thee.
10.71.11
/0 śrī-śuka uvāca
ity uddhava-vaco rājan sarvato-bhadram acyutam /
devarṣir yadu-vṛddhāś ca kṛṣṇaś ca pratyapūjayan //

O King, the divine sage, the elders of the Yadus, and Kṛṣṇa
honored Uddhava's advice, which was auspicious in every way and infallible.
11. Sri Suka said:— O king, the counsel thus offered, by Uddhava was faultless and good in every respect; Narada, aged Yadavas, Krishna and all commended it.
10.71.12
athādiśat prayāṇāya bhagavān devakī-sutaḥ /
bhṛtyān dāruka-jaitrādīn anujñāpya gurūn vibhuḥ //
Then the almighty Lord, son of Devakī, having obtained permission from his elders,
ordered his servants Dāruka, Jaitra, and others to make ready for departure.
12. With the approval of the elders and preceptors the Almighty and all pervading Lord, now Devaki's son, ordered His servants, Daruka, Jaitra and others to prepare for the journey.
10.71.13

Having sent ahead his wives with their sons and provisions,
and having taken leave of Saṅkarṣaṇa and the king of the Yadus, the slayer of his foes
mounted his chariot brought by the charioteer, bearing the Garuḍa emblem.
13. Having sent in advance the ladies of His harem and children and luggage and taken leave of Balarama and Ugrasena, O destroyer of enemies, He (Krishna) mounted His chariot brought in by His charioteer and distinguished with the flag bearing the emblem of Garuda. (—Krishna, the destroyer of enemies etc. D.)

Then the sage, honored by the lord of the Yadus, bowed to him, placed him in his heart,

Thus addressed, the messenger departed and reported faithfully to the kings;
and they, longing for liberation, eagerly awaited the sight of Śauri.
20. Thus replied, the messenger went away and acquainted the kings truly with what took place: they also yearning to get released, looked forward to Krishna's appearance on the spot.
