2.3.3

The Mahāsaṃnipāta-sūtra originally comprises one hundred thousand gāthās. If translated in full, it would make about three hundred fascicles. The present scripture translator, Tripiṭaka Master Guptā, often said: "More than two thousand li southeast of Khotan is the country of Cakkuka. Its king is pure in faith and reveres the Mahāyāna. Famous monks from various lands who enter his territory are all tested: if they study the Hīnayāna, they are sent away and not permitted to stay; if they are Mahāyāna practitioners, they are invited to remain and receive offerings. In the royal palace itself are kept the three great scriptures—the Mahāprajñāpāramitā, the Mahāsaṃnipāta, and the Avataṃsaka—each comprising one hundred thousand gāthās. However, as the time of the Sage grew distant, ordinary minds gradually dimmed and could not retain the whole, making excerpts and copies according to their capacity, which resulted in the Indic originals brought here being incomplete in their parts. When an abridged text came, an abridged translation was made; when an expanded text came, an expanded translation was made. Therefore, what was translated by former sages such as Zhi [Qian] and [Dharma]rakṣa, as well as produced by [Kumāra]jīva, amounted sometimes to twenty-seven, sometimes to thirty, or again thirty-one fascicles, the scrolls never being definitively settled. Once promulgated, this was constantly lamented with a sigh. Then during the Northern Qi, [Narendrayaśas] produced the Candragarbha-sūtra in twelve fascicles; and down to the Kaihuang era, it again fell to [Narendra]yaśas to translate the Sūryagarbha-sūtra in fifteen fascicles. Since both belong within the original, ancient chapters of the Mahāsaṃnipāta, with heartfelt joy and rejoicing, they were combined in accordance with it into sixty scrolls."
