However, there are currently three versions of the Suvarṇaprabhāsa: first, the four fascicles translated by Dharmakṣema; next, the five fascicles translated by [Yaśo]gupta; and further, the seven fascicles translated by Paramārtha. Its preface states in brief: Master Dharmakṣema noted that the Suvarṇaprabhāsa Sūtra was deficient and missing sections and chapters; whenever he investigated the text and probed its meaning, he believed this assertion was verified. Yet there were no grounds for collation, so he remained deeply yearning, awake or asleep. In the Datong era of Emperor Wu of the Liang, an imperial decree dispatched the Attendant Zhang Ji and others to invite the Tripiṭaka Master Paramārtha (rendered in Liang as Zhendi) from the country of Ujjayinī in Western India. Bringing sūtras and śāstras with him, he respectfully complied with the imperial command. In the first year of the Taiqing era, when cataloguing the various sūtras, it turned out that the four chapters—on the Three Bodies, Distinguishing Karmic Hindrances, the Dhāraṇī for Extinguishing, and the Most Pure Ground Relying on Emptiness to Fulfill Vows—were indeed missing. They were now separately made into seven fascicles. Relying on the 260 works of newly arrived sūtras, among which there were further the Chapter on the Dhāraṇī of the Master of Silver and the Chapter on Entrustment, the Master translated them out. The śramaṇa Yancong collated them again, combining them into eight fascicles. The complete fullness of its chapters and sections truly began with this.
