Section 4 of the Detailed Catalogue: Catalogue of Abridgements Eliminating Redundancies
27.3
One hundred forty-seven works in four hundred eight fascicles
27.4
As for the Catalogue of Abridging Redundancies: this refers to texts that share the same original yet bear different titles, or that were extracted as abridgements from larger works and thus constitute superfluous redundancies. These are now all excised. However, with the passage of many years, errors and corruptions have been transmitted concurrently; multiplying scrolls and fascicles wastes effort and labor. Now, having collated similarities and differences in detail to clearly distinguish correctness from error, they are set forth item by item for reference.
27.5
Newly Identified Separate Extracts
27.6
Sixty-seven works in one hundred eighty-five fascicles
27.7
Xukongzang suowen jing (Sūtra of the Questions of Ākāśagarbha), eight fascicles (also called Fangdeng zhu Xukongzang jing, or simply Xukongzang jing; or in five fascicles).
The single sūtra above is a separate excerpt circulated from the chapter on Ākāśagarbha Bodhisattva in the Mahāsaṃnipāta-sūtra. The Great Zhou Catalogue states that it was translated by the śramaṇa Shengjian of the Qifu Qin dynasty, which is erroneous. The translation by that Shengjian is a missing text.
Xukongzang pusa wen chijing de ji fu jing (Sūtra of Ākāśagarbha Bodhisattva Asking How Much Merit Is Obtained from Upholding the Sūtra), one fascicle.
The single sūtra above is also an excerpted text from the Ākāśagarbha chapter of the Mahāsaṃnipāta. The various catalogues all state that it was translated by Kumārajīva, Tripiṭaka master of the Yao Qin dynasty, which is erroneous.
Yiqieshi wang suoxing tanboluomi jing (Sūtra of the Practice of the Perfection of Giving by King Sarvadada), one fascicle.
The single sūtra above is extracted from the section on the perfection of giving without limit in the Liudu ji jing. The various catalogues all state that it was translated by Kumārajīva, Tripiṭaka master of the Yao Qin dynasty, which is erroneous.
Dafangguang rulai xingqi weimi zang jing (Sūtra of the Inconceivable Secret Treasury of the Tathāgata's Nature-Origination of the Great Expansive Sūtra), two fascicles.
The single sūtra above is an extract circulated separately from the chapter on the Nature-Origination of the Jewel King Tathāgata in the older Avataṃsaka-sūtra. At the head of the opening chapter, a prologue inspiring faith was added, and the initial nidāna of the first assembly was placed at its beginning. Catalogues such as Fei Zhangfang's, which state that it was an anonymous translation of the Western Jin, are mistaken.
Suiyuan wangsheng jing (Sūtra of Rebirth According to One's Vows), one fascicle (also named Guanding suiyuan wangsheng shifang jingtu jing; also named Puguang pusa jing).
The single sūtra above is the tenth fascicle, the Samantaprabhā Chapter, of the Great Abhiṣeka Sūtra; or, in some editions, it is found in the twelfth fascicle. Catalogues such as Fei Zhangfang's all state that it was translated by the upāsaka Zhi Qian of the Wu dynasty, or that it was translated by the Tripiṭaka master Dharmarakṣa of the Western Jin; both statements are mistaken.
Yaoshi liuliguang jing (Sūtra of the Medicine Master Lapis Lazuli Light), one fascicle (also named Guanding bachuzui guoshi desheng jing).
The single sūtra above is the twelfth fascicle of the Great Abhiṣeka Sūtra; or, in some editions, it is found in the tenth fascicle. Catalogues such as Fei Zhangfang's all state that it was translated by the śramaṇa Huijian of Luye Monastery during the Song dynasty, which is erroneous.
Second Assembly of the Mahāprajñāpāramitā-sūtra, seventy-eight fascicles (popularly titled the "Newly Translated Larger Section, Radiating Wisdom").
Fourth Assembly of the Mahāprajñāpāramitā-sūtra, eighteen fascicles (popularly titled the "Newly Translated Aṣṭasāhasrikā, Smaller Section").
The two sūtras above are commonly transmitted by the vulgar as having been translated by the Tripiṭaka master Yijing, who is alleged to have separately changed their titles and copied them for circulation. Having examined the sūtra catalogue of Master Yijing, he never translated these sūtras, and upon collating their texts, they are identical to the Mahāprajñāpāramitā-sūtra. Fearing people might not know the details, this is recorded here.
Zuisheng tianwang bore jing (Sūtra of Wisdom of the Most Supreme Heavenly King), eight fascicles (also called the "Newly Translated Suvikrāntacintīdevaputra-prajñāpāramitā").
The single sūtra above is the Sixth Assembly of the Mahāprajñāpāramitā-sūtra; it is a variant translation of the same original as the older Suvikrāntacintīdevaputra-prajñāpāramitā-sūtra.
Manshu bore jing (Sūtra of the Wisdom of Mañjuśrī), two fascicles (also called the "Newly Translated Mañjuśrī-prajñā").
The single sūtra above is the Mañjuśrī Section of the Seventh Assembly of the Mahāprajñāpāramitā-sūtra; it is a variant translation of the same original as the older Mañjuśrī-prajñā.
Lici bore jing (Sūtra of the Principle of Wisdom), one fascicle.
The single sūtra above is the Prajñānaya Section of the Tenth Assembly of the Mahāprajñāpāramitā-sūtra.
Miji jingang lishi jing (Sūtra of the Secret-Traces Vajrapāṇi Wrestler), two fascicles.
The single sūtra above: the Neidian lu's claim that it is an anonymous translation is wrong. Now, investigating its original, it comes from the Wu miji lishi jing; from the fourth sheet at the beginning of the fourth fascicle, after the five-syllable verses, down to the end of the fifth fascicle, the phrasing is completely identical.
Zengyi ahan jing (Ekottarāgama-sūtra), one fascicle.
The single sūtra above consists of three sūtras excerpted from the twenty-first fascicle of the Ekottarāgama-sūtra: the first explains the four brahmic merits, the next explains the four nutriments, and the last explains the four unhindered understandings. Fei Zhangfang's catalogue, which states that it was translated by the śramaṇa Faju of the Western Jin, is erroneous.
Xing qixing xianbao jing (Sūtra on the Immediate Retribution of Practicing Seven Deeds), one fascicle, one sheet.
The single sūtra above is extracted from the thirty-fourth fascicle of the Ekottarāgama-sūtra.
Shi'er yinyuan jing (Sūtra on the Twelve Causes and Conditions), one fascicle, three sheets.
The single sūtra above is extracted from the forty-sixth fascicle of the Ekottarāgama-sūtra. The Zhou Catalogue placed it in the Mahāyāna canon, stating that it was an alternative translation of the same original as Contemplating the Twelve Causes and Conditions Beneath the Palm Tree, which is erroneous.
Jie xiangying fa jing (Sūtra on Dharma Conjoined with the Precepts), one fascicle.
The single sūtra above is extracted from the thirtieth fascicle of the Saṃyuktāgama-sūtra. Fei Zhangfang's catalogue, which states that it was translated by the Western Regions śramaṇa Zhu Tanwulan of the Eastern Jin, is erroneous.
Biqiu wen fo duo youposai mingzhong jing (Sūtra on the Monk Inquiring of the Buddha About the Deaths of Many Upāsakas), one fascicle.
The single sūtra above is also extracted from the thirtieth fascicle of the Saṃyuktāgama-sūtra. Fei Zhangfang's catalogue, which states that it was translated by the śramaṇa Faju of the Western Jin, is erroneous.
Dufu zhangzhe jing (Sūtra of the Solitary Wealthy Elder), one fascicle.
The single sūtra above is extracted from the forty-sixth fascicle of the Saṃyuktāgama-sūtra. Fei Zhangfang's catalogue, which states that it was translated by the Tripiṭaka master An Shigao of the Later Han, is erroneous.
Kao zhong sheng sanshi zuo'e jing (Sūtra on Sentient Beings Doing Evil in the Three Times), one fascicle.
The single sūtra above is extracted from the eighth fascicle of the Udānavarga. Fei Zhangfang's catalogue, which states that it was translated by the śramaṇa Faju of the Western Jin, is erroneous.
Chujia gongde jing (Sūtra of the Merit of Leaving the Household Life), one fascicle.
The single sūtra above is extracted from the beginning of the Chapter on the Merit of Leaving the Household Life in the Sūtra of the Wise and the Foolish. Fei Zhangfang's catalogue, which states that it was translated by the upāsaka Zhi Qian of the Wu dynasty, is erroneous.
Fo wei nianshao poluomen shuo zhishan jing (Sūtra of the Buddha Explaining Knowing Goodness for a Young Brahmin), one fascicle.
Extracted from the fourth fascicle of the Saṃyuktāgama-sūtra. Fei Zhangfang's catalogue, which states that it was translated by the Tripiṭaka master An Shigao of the Later Han, is erroneous.
Fo wei Najuluo zhangzhe shuo genshu jing (Sūtra of the Buddha Explaining the Ripening of Faculties for Elder Nakulapitā), one fascicle.
Extracted from the fifth fascicle of the Saṃyuktāgama-sūtra. Fei Zhangfang's catalogue, which states that it was translated by the Tripiṭaka master An Shigao of the Later Han, is erroneous.
Fo wei waidao Xushen shuo liyu jing (Sūtra of the Buddha Explaining Freedom from Desire for the Non-Buddhist Suśīma), one fascicle.
Extracted from the fourteenth fascicle of the Saṃyuktāgama-sūtra. Fei Zhangfang's catalogue, which states that it was translated by the upāsaka Zhi Qian of the Wu dynasty, is erroneous.
Ayuwang shi ban amoleguo jing (Sūtra of King Aśoka Giving Half an Āmalaka Fruit), one fascicle.
Extracted from the twenty-fifth fascicle of the Saṃyuktāgama-sūtra.
Chansi manzu jing (Sūtra on the Fulfillment of Dhyāna Contemplation), one fascicle.
Extracted from the twenty-ninth fascicle of the Saṃyuktāgama-sūtra.
Based on Fei Zhangfang's catalogue, the attribution to two earlier and later translations is entirely erroneous.
The five sūtras above were placed among the missing texts in the Zhou Catalogue. Now their texts have been found; they are all extracted from the Saṃyuktāgama. Since they are separate extracts, they are excised and not recorded.
Mojieyu yinyuan jing (Sūtra on the Causes and Conditions of the Makara Fish), one fascicle. Extracted from the ninth fascicle.
Zunzhe Wutuoyi yindao zhuren lifo seng jing (Sūtra of the Venerable Udāyin Leading People to Pay Homage to the Buddha and Saṅgha), one fascicle. Extracted from the eleventh fascicle.
Huan benguo du fuwang jing (Sūtra of Returning to the Native Country to Convert the Father King), one fascicle. Extracted from the end of the seventeenth fascicle and beginning of the eighteenth fascicle.
Shuisheng taizi jing (Sūtra of Prince Born from Water), one fascicle. Extracted from the nineteenth fascicle.
Shiwu fafefa jing (Sūtra on the Dharmic and Non-Dharmic Giving of Things), one fascicle. Extracted from the twenty-fourth fascicle.
Jiaojie Luohuluo jing (Sūtra on the Admonition of Rāhula), one fascicle. Extracted from the twenty-fifth fascicle.
Wuqu shengsilunzhuai jing (Sūtra on the Transmigration through the Five Destinies), one fascicle. Extracted from the thirty-fourth fascicle.
Shanlai biqiu yinyuan jing (Sūtra on the Causes and Conditions of Ehibhikṣu), one fascicle. Extracted from the forty-second fascicle.
Qi youshi wushi fuye jing (Sūtra on the Seven Material and Immaterial Meritorious Deeds), one fascicle. Extracted from the forty-sixth fascicle.
The nine sūtras below Mojieyu yinyuan jing are all extracted from the Mūlasarvāstivāda-vinaya.
Huosheng zhangzhe shoubao jing (Sūtra on Elder Agnidatta Receiving Retribution), two fascicles. Extracted from the second and third fascicles.
Zunzhe Shanhe haosheng jing (Sūtra of Venerable Sujāta's Fine Voice), one fascicle. Extracted from the fourth fascicle.
Wuzhong shuoluo jing (Sūtra on Five Kinds of Water Strainers), one fascicle. Extracted from the fifth fascicle.
Shengman furen benyuan jing (Sūtra on the Previous Avadāna of Queen Śrīmālā), one fascicle. Extracted from the seventh fascicle.
Guangsheng wang xin fo jing (Sūtra of King Pradyota Believing in the Buddha), one fascicle. Extracted from the eighth fascicle.
Zhu shizhong shoubao jing (Sūtra on the Retribution for Exterminating the Śākya Clan), two fascicles. Extracted from the eighth and ninth fascicles.
Dashezhu biqiuni ru niepan jing (Sūtra of the Nun Mahāprajāpatī Entering Nirvāṇa), one fascicle. Extracted from the tenth fascicle.
Fo wei Nantuona shuo chujia rutai jing (Sūtra of the Buddha Explaining Leaving Household Life and Entering the Womb for Nanda), two fascicles; incorporated into the fourteenth assembly of the Ratnakūṭa; extracted from the eleventh and twelfth fascicles.
Jingfa sheshen jing (Sūtra on Sacrificing the Body out of Reverence for the Dharma), one fascicle. Extracted from the beginning of the fourteenth fascicle.
Du er xiejian tongzi deguo jing (Sūtra on Converting Two Youths of Wrong Views Who Obtained the Fruit), one fascicle. Extracted from the fourteenth fascicle.
Qingjing weiyi jing (Sūtra on Pure Deportment), one fascicle (also called Xijing weiyi). Extracted from the sixteenth fascicle.
Damulian shoubao jing (Sūtra on Mahāmaudgalyāyana Receiving Retribution), one fascicle. Extracted from the eighteenth fascicle.
Chudansheng xian daruiying jing (Sūtra on the Great Auspicious Signs Manifested at the Initial Birth), one fascicle. Extracted from the twentieth fascicle.
Du Jiaduoyanna jing (Sūtra on the Conversion of Kātyāyana), one fascicle. Extracted from the twentieth fascicle.
Yiluobo longwang yebao yinyuan jing (Sūtra on the Causes and Conditions of Karmic Retribution of Dragon King Elāpattra), one fascicle. Extracted from the twenty-first fascicle.
Regarding the differences between this Yiluobo longwang jing and the Du Jiaduoyanna jing: the former has an additional four sheets at its beginning, but from the nidāna onward the text is entirely identical without distinction. Why create redundant excerpts by dividing it into two sūtras?
Anle furen yinyuan jing (Sūtra on the Causes and Conditions of Lady Sukhāvatī), one fascicle. Extracted from the twenty-first fascicle.
Zengyang yinyuan jing (Sūtra on the Causes and Conditions of Augmentation), three fascicles. Extracted from the twenty-second, twenty-third, and twenty-fourth fascicles.
Miaoguang yinyuan jing (Sūtra on the Causes and Conditions of Rocana), one fascicle. Extracted from the twenty-fifth fascicle.
Xiangfu waidao xian dashentong jing (Sūtra on Subduing Non-Buddhists by Displaying Great Spiritual Penetrations), one fascicle. Extracted from the twenty-sixth fascicle.
Dayao shanqiao fangbian jing (Sūtra on Mahauṣadha's Skillful Means), two fascicles. Extracted from the twenty-seventh and twenty-eighth fascicles.
Fo cong tian xia zhanbuzhou jing (Sūtra of the Buddha Descending from Heaven to Jambudvīpa), one fascicle. Extracted from the twenty-ninth fascicle.
Du Shou Gutami jing (Sūtra on the Conversion of Lean Gautamī), one fascicle. Extracted from the thirtieth fascicle.
Helidi mu yinyuan jing (Sūtra on the Causes and Conditions of Mother Hārītī), one fascicle. Extracted from the thirty-first fascicle.
Fayu ni zaijia deguo jing (Sūtra on the Nun Dharmadinnā Attaining the Fruit While at Home), one fascicle. Extracted from the thirty-second fascicle.
Shusheng poluomen jiaoman jing (Sūtra on the Arrogance of the Tree-Born Brahmin), one fascicle. Extracted from the end of the thirty-fourth fascicle and beginning of the thirty-fifth fascicle.
Dizi shi shi jing (Sūtra of the Disciple Serving the Teacher), one fascicle. Extracted from the thirty-fifth fascicle.
Qizhong butuizhuan jing (Sūtra on the Seven Kinds of Non-Retrogression), one fascicle. Extracted from the thirty-fifth fascicle.
Fo wei zhangzhe shuo fangyi jing (Sūtra of the Buddha Explaining Heedlessness to the Elder), one fascicle. Extracted from the thirty-sixth fascicle.
Didong yinyuan jing (Sūtra on the Causes and Conditions of Earthquakes), one fascicle. Extracted from the thirty-sixth fascicle.
Sizhong heibai fayin jing (Sūtra on the Four Types of Dark and Bright Dharma Seals), one fascicle. Extracted from the thirty-seventh fascicle.
Fo jiang ru niepan du Shanxian jing (Sūtra of the Buddha Converting Subhadra Prior to Entering Nirvāṇa), two fascicles. Extracted from the middle of the thirty-seventh fascicle.
Fo ban niepan xingyu dachen gao wang jing (Sūtra of the Buddha's Parinirvāṇa and Minister Varṣākāra Reporting to the King), one fascicle. Extracted from the thirty-eighth fascicle.
Ba daguowang fen sheli jing (Sūtra of the Eight Great Kings Dividing the Relics), one fascicle. Extracted from the beginning of the thirty-ninth fascicle.
The two sūtras above overlap and intermingle in phrasing: compared to the subsequent text, Minister Reporting to the King has more than two extra sheets at the beginning; compared to the preceding sūtra, Dividing the Relics has about three extra sheets at the end. Neither represents a different extract; taking them as two sūtras is redundant and inappropriate.
The thirty-three sūtras below Huosheng zhangzhe are all extracted from the Mūlasarvāstivāda-vinaya-kṣudrakavastu (there is also the Geigu zhangzhe qing hua si yinyuan, one fascicle, extracted from the seventeenth fascicle of the Kṣudrakavastu and the fifth fascicle of the Vinayakārikā).
The forty-two works in forty-nine fascicles from the Mojieyu yinyuan jing downward are all nidānas from the Sarvāstivāda Vinaya, excerpted and circulated by the Tripiṭaka master Yijing. Since they belong to the category of separate extracts, they are all excised. Among them, the Shiwu fafefa jing and the Dizi shi shi jing contain only minor variations compared to the expansive text and are not different from the original; why make separate titles and fascicles of them? Grouped with the various separate extracts, they are all excised.
27.8
Newly Identified Sūtras with Different Titles but Identical Text
27.9
Twenty works in fifty-two fascicles
27.10
Bodhisattva-gocara-vikurvaṇa-nirdeśa-sūtra, ten fascicles.
Translated by the Tripiṭaka master Bodhiruci of the Northern Wei; from the catalogue of Baochang.
The one scripture above is an alternate title for the Saccaka-nirgrantha-sūtra. The Zhou catalogue listed it separately and further claimed that the text was lacking, which is an error.
New Daoxing jing, ten fascicles (or seven fascicles).
Translated by the Tripiṭaka master Dharmarakṣa of the Western Jin (from the catalogue of Fei Zhangfang and others).
The one scripture above: upon examining the various canon copies, they were all completely identical in phrasing to the Aṣṭasāhasrikā-prajñāpāramitā-sūtra, which is an error in those copies. The New Daoxing jing translated by Master Dharmarakṣa currently lacks an extant text.
I have heard that in the Eastern Capital there is a copy of Dharmarakṣa's [translation], but searching for it has not yielded it.
Mahāvaipulya Mahāsaṃnipāta-sūtra, eight fascicles.
The one scripture above is recorded in both the Tang Neidian lu and the Great Zhou catalogue. Now upon examining its text, it is simply the sixth case of the combined Mahāsaṃnipāta-sūtra. The first two fascicles are titled "Chapter of the Bodhisattvas of the Ten Directions," which is the Mingdu wushi jiaoji jing. The latter six fascicles are the Akṣayamati-sūtra. As for the Mingdu wushi jiaoji jing, for unknown reasons it was compiled into the Mahāsaṃnipāta. Because of discrepancies, it is now retained as an independent work. Since this was entered redundantly, it is now eliminated.
Anavatapta-nāgarāja-sūtra, two fascicles.
The one scripture above is completely identical in phrasing with the Hongdao guangxian sanmei jing, differing only in title. Now one text is retained.
Hedao shenzu jing, three fascicles.
The one scripture above is identical in text and different in title from the Dao shenzu wuji bianhua jing.
Aiqi jing, three fascicles (or two fascicles, six chapters).
The one scripture above is identical in text and different in title from the Mahāvaipulya Mahāparinirvāṇa-sūtra. The first chapter of the Vaipulya Nirvāṇa is titled "Lamentation" (Aiqi), and taking this chapter title, it was made into a scripture title. Compared to the Vaipulya Nirvāṇa, it lacks the latter three chapters and the text is incomplete.
Baotian huiyin sanmei jing, one fascicle.
The one scripture above is completely identical in phrasing with the Huiyin sanmei jing, differing only in having an expanded or abridged title. Zhangfang's catalogue states that the Huiyin sanmei jing is also called the Baotian huiyin sanmei jing. The Zhou Canon Catalogue recorded both texts, one as a single translation and one as a retranslation, which is a gross error.
Luzi jing, one fascicle.
The one scripture above is identical in text and different in title from the Lumu jing. According to its textual meaning, it should properly be established based on "mother." Zhangfang's catalogue stating that the Luzi jing was translated by the upāsaka Zhi Qian of the Wu dynasty is an error.
Xiao Wuliangshou jing, one fascicle.
The one scripture above is identical in text and different in title from the Amitābha-sūtra. As for the Xiao Wuliangshou jing translated by the Tripiṭaka master Guṇabhadra of the Song dynasty, there is currently no extant text.
Taizang jing, one fascicle.
The one scripture above is identical in text and different in title from the Wugouxiannü jing.
Wencheng shier yinyuan jing, one fascicle.
The one scripture above is identical in text and different in title from the Beiduoshu xia siwei shier yinyuan jing. This Wencheng jing ought to have a distinct text, but searching for it has not yielded it.
Great Ānāpāna Sūtra, one fascicle (or two fascicles; the Neidian lu says two fascicles, and Zhangfang's catalogue says one fascicle).
The one scripture above is completely identical in phrasing with the Da anban shouyi jing, differing only in having an expanded or abridged title. Various catalogues retaining both texts is a gross error.
Shenri jing, one fascicle.
The one scripture above is identical in text and different in title from the Candraprabha-kumāra-sūtra in the Mahāyāna canon. The father's name was Shenri (Sūryagupta) and the son was titled Candraprabha; based on this difference, distinct titles were assigned to the scripture. Zhangfang's catalogue stating that the Shenri jing was translated by the upāsaka Zhi Qian of the Wu dynasty is an error.
Lunzhuan wudao zuifu baoying jing, one fascicle.
The one scripture above is completely identical in phrasing with the Zuifu baoying jing, differing only in having an expanded or abridged title.
Zhantuoyue jing, one fascicle.
The one scripture above is completely identical in phrasing with the Zhantuoyue guowang jing, differing only in having an expanded or abridged title. In the Zhou Canon Catalogue, the Zhantuoyue jing was compiled under single translations, while the Zhantuoyue guowang jing was placed under retranslations. Recording it in both places is a gross error.
Zhenwei shamen jing, one fascicle (Zhangfang's catalogue notes: also titled Mohe biqiu jing, and also titled Jiaye jinjie jing).
The one scripture above is an alternate title of the Jiaye jinjie jing, and the phrasing is completely identical. Those who say it was translated by the śramaṇa Huijian of Luye Monastery during the Song dynasty are mistaken.
Dharmacakrapravartana-sūtra, one fascicle.
Upon examining the one scripture above, its text was not extant. In the various scriptural canons, it was erroneously replaced with the Dharmacakrapravartana-śāstra. Recently, in the Eastern Capital, the authentic text was found and compiled into the canon catalogue.
Pinzholu wei wang shuofa jing, one fascicle.
The one scripture above is completely identical in phrasing with the Pinlutuluozhe wei youtuoyan wang shuofa jing, differing only in having an expanded or abridged title.
Aranya-xichanfa jing, two fascicles.
The one scripture above is identical in text and different in title from the Zuohan sanmei jing.
Chan miyao jing, five fascicles.
The one scripture above is said to have been translated by the Tripiṭaka master Dharmamitra of the Song dynasty, and is said to be an alternate translation from the same source text as the Miyao fa translated by the Tripiṭaka master Kumārajīva of the Later Qin. Now, upon examining and searching the text from beginning to end, it is extremely corrupt and is not the original scripture. The first fascicle is in fact the text of the Zhi chanbing miyao fa, yet it is incomplete, breaking off midway. From the second fascicle onward, it is the Chan miyao fa translated by Kumārajīva; starting past the midpoint of the first fascicle and continuing to the end of the third fascicle, its text is also incomplete. Lacking more than ten sheets, it was arbitrarily divided into four fascicles, making five together with the preceding. As for the translation by Dharmamitra, its text is currently lacking.
27.11
Newly verified scriptures entered into the catalogue more than once
27.12
Eight works, thirty fascicles
27.13
Bodhisattvabhūmi-dhāra-sūtra, ten fascicles (or eight fascicles; also titled Bodhisattva-śīla-sūtra, and also titled Bodhisattvabhūmi-sūtra).
The one scripture above is also titled Bodhisattvabhūmi-dhāra-śāstra. In the present catalogue, it is compiled as vinaya, retaining its scripture title and eliminating its entry as a treatise. In the catalogue, stating that the Bodhisattvabhūmi-dhāra-sūtra lacks an extant text is an error. Furthermore, in the Zhou catalogue, this single text, having multiple titles, was confused back and forth, entered redundantly in six places in all, which is a gross error.
(Entered in one place among Mahāyāna scriptures, two places among Mahāyāna vinayas, one place among Mahāyāna treatises, and two places in the catalogue of lacking texts).
Other redundant scriptures are not few in number; fearing to waste paper and ink, they are described only briefly.
Abhayadattā-sūtra, one fascicle (now compiled into the Ratnakūṭa-sūtra).
Paramārtha-dharma-vijaya-sūtra, one fascicle.
Maitreya-bodhisattva-paripṛcchā-pūrvapraṇidhāna-sūtra, one fascicle.
The three scriptures above were recorded in two places in the Great Zhou Canon Catalogue, under both single translations and retranslations, which is an error. The entries under single translations are now removed, and they are compiled among the retranslations.
Bodhicittoppāda-sūtra, two fascicles (also titled Bodhicittoppāda-śāstra).
The one scripture above was recorded in two places in the Zhou Canon Catalogue, among Mahāyāna scriptures and among Mahāyāna treatises, which is an error. Now, because it was composed by a bodhisattva, its scripture title is removed and it is retained in the treatise catalogue.
Jianwang jing, one fascicle (also titled Da xiao jianwang jing).
The one scripture above was recorded in both the canon and lacking-text catalogues in the Zhou [catalogue], which is an error.
Dharmapada, two fascicles (also titled Dharmapada Collection).
The one scripture above was recorded in two places in the Zhou Canon Catalogue, under Mahāyāna translations and within anthologies and biographies, which is an error. Upon examining the texts, they are identical and cannot be divided into two. Although it was retranslated in the past, one text is lacking. It is now removed from the scriptures and compiled within the anthologies.
Mahāyānasaṃgrahabhāṣya, twelve fascicles.
The one treatise above: the Kaihuang and Renshou second-year canonical catalogues of the Sui, as well as the Tang Neidian lu, the Great Zhou catalogue, and others, all preserve two texts, stating that it is an alternate translation from the same source text as the fifteen-fascicle Saṃgrahabhāṣya, and that both were translated by the Tripiṭaka master Paramārtha of the Chen dynasty, which is an error. Now, collating the phrasing from beginning to end, they are completely identical. Although there is a difference in the number of fascicles, it cannot be divided into two works. Only the fifteen-fascicle text is retained; the one made into twelve fascicles is eliminated.
27.14
Newly verified scriptures to be incorporated into major collections
27.15
Fifty-two works, one hundred and forty-one fascicles
27.16
Suvarṇaprabhāsa-sūtra, four fascicles (eighteen chapters).
Translated by Tripiṭaka Master Dharmakṣema under the Northern Liang.
Suvarṇaprabhāsa-sūtra, seven fascicles (twenty-two chapters, or six fascicles).
Complete translation by Tripiṭaka Master Paramārtha under the Chen, merging four [texts] to make seven fascicles.
Suvarṇaprabhāsa-sūtra on Further Extending Lifespan and Great Eloquence Dhāraṇī Sūtra, seven fascicles (continuation of the four-fascicle text;
the two chapters on Extending Lifespan and Great Eloquence continued by Tripiṭaka Master Yaśogupta under the Northern Zhou).
The above: Śramaṇa Baogui of Xingshan Monastery under the Sui took the earlier three texts, together with the two chapters on "The Silver Lord" and "Entrustment" translated by Jñānagupta, making a total of twenty-four chapters combined into eight fascicles. The earlier three texts were all merged into it without addition or omission. The completed eight-fascicle version is retained for entry into the canon; as the three texts above are redundant, they are omitted.
Guhyakādhipati-sūtra, ten fascicles.
Translated by Tripiṭaka Master Dharmarakṣa under the Western Jin.
In the third assembly; or four fascicles, or five fascicles, or eight fascicles.
Bodhisattvasvapna-sūtra, two fascicles.
Translated by Tripiṭaka Master Dharmarakṣa under the Western Jin.
In the fourth assembly; newly retitled "Assembly of Śuddhāvāsakāyika-devaputra".
Dharmadhātusvabhāvānirviśeṣa-sūtra, two fascicles.
Translated by Tripiṭaka Master Mandrasena under the Liang.
In the eighth assembly.
Daśadharmaka-sūtra, one fascicle.
Translated by Tripiṭaka Master Buddhaśānta under the Yuan Wei.
In the ninth assembly; retitled "Assembly of the Mahāyāna Daśadharmaka".
Mahābodhisattvapiṭaka-sūtra, twenty fascicles.
Translated by Tripiṭaka Master Xuanzang under the Great Tang.
In the twelfth assembly.
Sūtra Spoken by the Buddha for Nanda on Going Forth and Entering the Womb, one fascicle (extracted from the Sarvāstivāda Vinaya).
Translated by Tripiṭaka Master Yijing under the Great Tang.
