16.1

Compiled by the śramaṇa Zhisheng of the Western Chongfu Temple in the gengwu year.

16.2

Part Three of the Classified Catalogue: Sūtras of Independent Circulation of Extracted Sections

16.3

(Six hundred and eighty-two works, eight hundred and twelve fascicles)

16.4

Extracted sūtras refers to those copied out of larger works to circulate independently, such as the Second Assembly of the *Mahāprajñāpāramitā-sūtra*. The gates of the Dharma are vast, their shores rarely reached; the scriptures are manifold, their boundaries inexhaustible. Hence, adapting to circumstances to transform and guide, responding to beings to bestow conditions, teachers often made brief use of them from within larger works according to the occasion. Readers did not know their origins, while students found their principles incomplete. Now I bring together their multiple strands and return them to their proper collections, pruning the older catalogues and adjusting their presence and absence. I fully record their titles and exhaustively detail their discrepancies, hoping that future scholars, observing the branches, will recognize the source. Fearing this may not yet be exhaustive, I entrust it to future sages.

16.5

Mahāyāna Extracted Texts

16.6

Two hundred and nine works, three hundred and twenty-eight fascicles

16.7.1

The Sūtra of the Second Assembly of the Mahāprajñāpāramitā, seventy-eight fascicles (contemporary popular titles call it the "Newly Translated Larger Prajñāpāramitā and Fangguang Prajñāpāramitā"; newly compiled above).

Regarding the one sūtra above: The catalogues of Fei Changfang and others all state that it was abridged by the upāsaka Wei Shidu during the reign of Emperor Hui of the Western Jin. It was edited and adapted from the older Daoxing [Sūtra], and is merely an essential variant extraction from the Smaller Prajñāpāramitā and Fangguang, etc. (The cataloguer notes: Since it is an abridgement extracted from the larger sūtra, it belongs to the category of extracted texts. Fearing that including it among the orthodox sūtras would cause error, it is appended to this section of the catalogue.)
The eleven works in one hundred and nineteen fascicles from the Sūtra of the Second Assembly of the Mahāprajñāpāramitā downward are extracted texts from the Prajñā section.
The Guhyakādhipati-vajrapāṇi-mahāyakṣa-senāpati Sūtra, two fascicles (derived from the Guhyakādhipati Assembly; the entry below in the Neidian and other catalogues which incorporated it into the orthodox scriptures was mistaken; newly compiled above).

(To the right, regarding this Yiqie shiwang jing, all the catalogues say it was translated by Kumārajīva. In the catalogue of extracted texts it is called the Sahetan wang jing, and there is also this sūtra among the anonymous translations after the Han. The opening preface to the Thousand Buddhas' Names says: 'The Bhadrakalpika-sūtra speaks of two thousand one hundred perfections, headed by Krakucchanda Buddha.' This sūtra has an alternative translation headed by Konākamana Buddha, which is this one.)
Guan fo xianghao jing, one fascicle (extracted from the Guan fo sanmei hai jing; newly compiled above);

Fo xiang Anguimoluo renmin huanxi jing, one fascicle (extracted from the fourth fascicle);
Dishishi Anguimoluo fafu jing, one fascicle;
Anguimoluo guihua jing, one fascicle (or says fusi, which should be an error);
Anguimoluo huiguo fa jing, one fascicle (or without the character fa);
Bosinige wang yu fa Anguimoluo jing, one fascicle (Sengyou's catalogue says: an extract; newly compiled above).
The eight works in eight fascicles, from the Anguimoluo mu upwards, are all extracted from the Aṅgulimāla-sūtra.

(Sengyou's catalogue says: compiled by the Eastern Jin śramaṇa Zhu Tanwulan at Xiezhenxi Temple in the sixth month of the twenty-first year of Taiyuan. In his preface, Tanwulan recorded it himself, but did not indicate what it was extracted from.)
Da guangming pusa bai sishiba yuan jing, one fascicle (Sengyou's catalogue says: an extract; newly compiled above);

16.7.4

Pusa liufa xing jing, one fascicle (Sengyou's catalogue says: an extract; newly compiled above);
Pusa zhu kuxing jing, one fascicle (Sengyou's catalogue says: an extract; sometimes without the character zhu; just over four sheets; newly compiled above);
Pusa he shuimian jing, one fascicle (Sengyou's catalogue says: an extract; newly compiled above);
Pusa he jia guo jing, one fascicle (Sengyou's catalogue says: an extract; newly compiled above);

Tonghao foming jing, one fascicle (three sheets; newly compiled above);
Sanshi fa jing, one fascicle (sometimes written with the character chi; two sheets; newly compiled above).
Regarding the ten works including the Sanshiqi pin, Sengyou's catalogue states they are extracts without specifying their sources. Among them, upon inspecting the text of the Pusa zhu kuxing jing, it is unquestionably an extract, yet it is still unknown from which sūtra or vinaya it derives. As for the four works including the Liu jing, I have now inspected their original texts, and they are indeed extracted texts. Furthermore, in the Sui Renshou Catalogue of Buddhist Scriptures, there are altogether one hundred and seventeen works in one hundred and thirty-seven fascicles of Mahāyāna extracted texts which also do not indicate their sources. Now, upon examining the catalogues of various dynasties, most have already been recorded. Its treating texts such as the Hu zhu tongzi jing and Tuolinbo jing as extracted texts is unwarranted. Since there is no reliable evidence, they can hardly be depended on. Having briefly described them as above, the remainder are deleted and not recorded.

Extracted Texts of the Mahāyāna Vinaya

16.9

Seven works, seven fascicles

16.10

Pusa dichi jie jing, one fascicle (Fajing's catalogue says: extracted from the Bodhisattvabhūmi);
Pusa jie yaoyi jing, one fascicle (Sengyou's catalogue says: an extract from the Bodhisattva Śīla, that is, the Bodhisattvabhūmi; Fajing's catalogue agrees);
Pusa shanjie shoujie jing, one fascicle (Fajing's catalogue says: extracted from the Shanjie jing);
Jingchu yiezhang jing, one fascicle (Sengyou's catalogue says: an extract from the Jing yiezhang jing; Fajing's catalogue agrees);
Upāsaka-śīla-sūtra Prātimokṣa, one fascicle (Fajing's catalogue says: extracted from the Upāsaka-śīla-sūtra);
Quande jing, one fascicle (Fajing's catalogue says: extracted from the Śāriputra-paścāttāpa-sūtra);
Zaijia pusa jie, one fascicle (newly compiled above).
Regarding this single Vinaya work to the right, it was catalogued as an anonymous translation in Fajing's catalogue. Having now personally inspected the text, although its provenance is unknown, it is undoubtedly an extract: it takes the preface to the Mahīśāsaka Vinaya precepts and places it at the beginning, followed by the precepts themselves. This was compiled by someone, not produced by translation. In Fajing's catalogue, there are ten more scriptures said to be extracts from various Vinayas; since it does not state where they come from, they are not retained. Where they may have been recorded in the catalogues of various dynasties, they are intentionally omitted here.

Yixing pin zhofo ming jing, one fascicle (Fajing's catalogue says: extracted from the Daśabhūmika-vibhāṣā; perhaps identical with the aforementioned Yixing fa).
In Fajing's catalogue, there are ten more scriptures said to be extracts from various śāstras; since it does not state where they come from, they are not retained. Where they may have been recorded in the catalogues of various dynasties, they are intentionally omitted here.

As for the two sūtras, the Ekottarāgama Sūtra and the Sūtra on Practicing the Seven Practices and Receiving Present Retribution, former accounts said that among those coming from the Ekottarāgama they were different translations and had compiled them into the current catalogue; having now examined them, they are extracted texts and not different translations.
