And their meanings have been made clear by diverse traditional narratives;

all of them have indeed been respectfully heard by us, O [sage] of great intellect! (2)
2.9.1.8
sarveṣāṃ manujānāṃ tu duṣkarāṇyeva tāni tu ..
Yet they are exceedingly difficult to practice for all humans,

prayatnenāti mahatā puruṣaiddheṃryyaśālibhiḥ ..
Even when practiced with immense effort by men possessing fortitude,

2.9.1.20
sautiruvāca ..
Sauti said:
2.9.1.21
maharṣirapi sāvarṇirevameva hi śaunaka ..
O Śaunaka, the great seer Sāvarṇi, indeed in this very manner,
2.9.1.22
vinītaḥ skandamaprākṣītpunaḥ śaṅkaranandanam .. 9 ..
having become humble, questioned Skanda again, the son of Śaṅkara. (9)
2.9.1.23
sāvarṇiruvāca ..
Sāvarṇi said:
2.9.1.24
śrutā nānāvidhā dharmmāḥ sāṅkhyajñānaṃ ca naikadhā ..
Various religious duties have been heard, and Sāṅkhya knowledge in many forms,
2.9.1.25
yogādīni tvaduktāni sādhanāni mayā guha .. 2.9.1.10 ..
as well as means such as yoga, which were spoken of by you, O Guha.
2.9.1.26
suduṣkarāṇi manye'haṃ tāni tvasmādṛśāṃ kila ..
I consider them very difficult to accomplish indeed for people like us;
2.9.1.27
mahatāmapi cānyeṣāṃ kṛcchrasādhyāni vai cirāt .. 11 ..
even for other great beings, they are surely attainable only with difficulty after a long time.
2.9.1.28
ato varṇāśramavatāṃ śreyaskṛtsukaraṃ ca yat ..
Therefore, you ought now to tell me that highest means,
2.9.1.29
sādhanaṃ tacchreṣṭhatamaṃ vaktumarhasi me'dhunā .. 12 ..
which brings welfare and is easy to perform for those belonging to the classes and stages of life.
2.9.1.30
sautiruvāca ..
Sauti said:
2.9.1.31
iti pṛṣṭo munīndreṇa tena jijñāsunā guhaḥ ..
Having been questioned in this way by that lord of sages, who was desirous of knowledge, Guha,
2.9.1.32
vāsudevaṃ hṛdi dhyāyankārttikeyaḥ sa ūcivān .. 13 ..
that Kārttikeya, meditating on Vāsudeva in his heart, spoke:
2.9.1.33
skanda uvāca .. śṛṇu brahmanpravakṣye'haṃ śrutaṃ pitṛmukhānmayā ..
Skanda said: Listen, O brahmin, I shall declare what was heard by me from the mouth of my father,
2.9.1.34
sarveṣāmapi jīvānāṃ sukaraṃ mokṣasādhanam .. 14 ..
an easily performed means of liberation for all living beings.
2.9.1.35
devatāprīṇanasamaṃ sveṣṭasiddhimabhīpsatām ..
Equal to pleasing the deity, for those desiring the achievement of their desired end,
2.9.1.36
nāstyanyasādhanaṃ kiñcidvarṇāśramavatāmiha .. 15 ..
there is no other means whatsoever for those belonging to the classes and stages of life here.
2.9.1.37
apyalpaṃ sukṛtaṃ karmma devasaṃbandhataḥ kṛtam ..
Even a small virtuous deed performed in connection with God
2.9.1.38
phalaṃ dadāti nirvighnaṃ mahadeva hi tannṛṇām .. 16 ..
bestows a very great fruit without impediment to men.
2.9.1.39
daivaṃ pitryaṃ svadharmmaśca kāmyaṃ karmmāpi yacca tat ..
Work pertaining to the gods, to the ancestors, one's own duty, and whatever work is done with desire—
2.9.1.40
devatāyāstu saṃbandhātsadyaḥ syādiṣṭasiddhidam .. 17 ..
through connection with the deity, it instantly grants the attainment of desired ends.
2.9.1.41
sāṅkhyayoga virāgādi prāguktaṃ yacca duṣkaram ..
What was previously spoken of as difficult—Sāṅkhya, yoga, dispassion, and the like—
2.9.1.42
tadapi syāddhi sukaramanenaivāśu siddhidam .. 18 ..
even that becomes easy and quickly yields perfection by this very means.
2.9.1.43
devasyārādhanenaiva yataḥ siddhyati vāñchitam ..
Because whatever is desired is accomplished through the worship of God alone,
2.9.1.44
ataḥ sarvairyyathāśakti prītyārādhyaḥ sa mānavaiḥ .. 19 ..
therefore, according to their ability, he should be worshipped with love by all human beings.
2.9.1.45
sāvarṇiruvāca..
Sāvarṇi said:
2.9.1.46
devā vahuvidhā proktāstvayā ṣaṇmukha me purā ..
Many kinds of gods were described by you previously, O Six-faced One,
2.9.1.47
nānāvidhā varṇitāśca tadārādhanarītayaḥ..2.9.1.20..
and diverse methods of worshipping them were described.
2.9.1.48
tatphalāni ca sarvāṇi tvayoktāni pṛthakpṛthak ..
All their fruits were spoken of by you individually;
2.9.1.49
svargādiprāptimukhyāni kālagrastāni tāni tu ..21..
prominent among them is attainment of heaven and the like, yet they are seized by time.
2.9.1.50
nivṛttidharmmiṇāṃ brahmā hyupāsteryyogināṃ guha ..
From the worship of Brahmā, O Guha, for yogins following the path of cessation,
2.9.1.51
janādilokāptiphalaṃ dviparārddhāntanaśvaram..22..
the fruit is the attainment of worlds such as Jana, yet it perishes at the end of two parārdhas.
2.9.1.52
duṣkarāṇīha saṃsādhya karmmāṇi purukṛcchrataḥ..
Having accomplished difficult deeds here through great hardship,
2.9.1.53
kṣayiṣṇuphalalābhaścettarhi kiṃ tadupārjanaiḥ..23..
if the gain of the fruit is perishable, then what is the use of acquiring it?
2.9.1.54
kālena nāśyate yeṣāṃ vapuḥ sthānabalādikam..
The worship of those denizens of heaven whose body,
2.9.1.55
teṣāṃ na rocate mahyamupāsā'tra divaukasām..24..
status, power, and the like are destroyed by time does not please me here.
2.9.1.56
yaḥ svayaṃ nirbhayo'nyeṣāṃ bhayaharttā sanātanaḥ ..
Tell me, O Guha, of that God who is himself fearless, the remover of fear for others, eternal,
2.9.1.57
nityadhāmā'kṣayaphalapradātā bhaktavatsalaḥ .. 25 ..
whose abode is imperishable, the giver of imperishable fruit, affectionate toward his devotees,
2.9.1.58
yasya prasādātsarveṣāṃ sarva eva manorathāḥ ..
by whose grace all desires whatsoever of all beings
2.9.1.59
siddhyeyuścāñjasaivā'tra taṃ devaṃ vada me guha .. 26 ..
would be accomplished straightforwardly here.
2.9.1.60
tadārādhanarītiṃ ca sukarāṃ śiṣṭasaṃmatām ..
And tell me in full detail that method of worshipping him which is easy
2.9.1.61
brūhi sarvāṃ viśeṣeṇa jijñāsāmīdamañjasā .. 27 ..
and approved by the wise; truly, I wish to know this.
2.9.1.62
sautiruvāca ..
Sauti said:
2.9.1.63
itthaṃ maharṣiṇā tena saṃpṛṣṭo bhagavānguhaḥ ..
Being thus questioned by that great seer, the Lord Guha,
2.9.1.64
suprasanna uvācedaṃ mānayaṃstamudāradhīḥ .. 28 ..
well-pleased and noble-minded, honouring him, said this:
2.9.1.65
iti śrīskānde mahāpurāṇa ekāśītisāhasryāṃ saṃhitāyāṃ dvitīye vaiṣṇavakhaṇḍe śrīvāsudevamāhātmye sāvarṇipraśno nāma prathamo'dhyāyaḥ .. 1 ..
Thus ends the first chapter, named "The Question of Sāvarṇi," in the Vāsudevamāhātmya of the second section, the Vaiṣṇavakhaṇḍa, in the glorious Skanda Mahāpurāṇa consisting of eighty-one thousand verses.
2.9.2.1
.. skanda uvāca ..
Skanda said:
2.9.2.2
mahāntaṃ praśnavitpraśnaṃ pṛcchasi tvami hā'nagha ..
You, who understand inquiries, ask a great question here, O sinless one.
2.9.2.3
nāsyottaraṃ varṣaśatairvaktuṃ śakyaṃ svatarkataḥ ..
The answer to this cannot be stated in hundreds of years by one's own reasoning
2.9.2.4
ṛte devaprasādādvai brahmañjñānivarairapi .. 1 ..
without the grace of God, O brahmin, even by the best of the wise.
2.9.2.5
vāsudevaprasādāttu mayā jñātaṃ vadāmi te ..
However, by the grace of Vāsudeva, what is known by me I shall declare to you.
2.9.2.6
anākhyeyaṃ na te kiñciddharmaniṣṭhāya sanmate .. 2 ..
Nothing is unmentionable to you, devoted to duty, O noble-minded one.
2.9.2.7
evameva hi papraccha nivṛtte bhārate raṇe ..
In this very manner, when the Bhārata war had ceased,
2.9.2.8
ajātaśatrurnṛpatirbhīṣmaṃ dharmmavidāṃvaram .. 3 ..
King Ajātaśatru questioned Bhīṣma, the best of knowers of dharma,
2.9.2.9
śayitaṃ śaraśayyāyāṃ dhyānaprāptācyutena ca ..
who was lying upon the bed of arrows, who had attained Acyuta through meditation,
2.9.2.10
prāptamaikātmyamavyagraṃ nigamāgamapāragam .. 4 ..
who had attained undisturbed oneness of soul, and had crossed to the far shore of the Vedas and Āgamas.
2.9.2.11
yudhiṣṭhira uvāca ..
Yudhiṣṭhira said:
2.9.2.12
caturṣu tāta varṇeṣu caturṣvapyāśrameṣu yaḥ ..
O father, among the four classes and among the four stages of life,
2.9.2.13
iccheccaturvargasiddhiṃ devatāṃ kāṃ yajeta saḥ..5..
whoever should desire the attainment of the fourfold aim of life, which deity should he worship?
2.9.2.14
nirvighrena ca kā siddhiḥ kathaṃ syādalpakālataḥ ..
And what success would arise without obstacles in a short time?
2.9.2.15
kathaṃ cāpyalpasukṛtī padavīṃ mahatīmiyāt..
And how may one of little virtue attain an exalted state?
2.9.2.16
etaṃ me saṃśayaṃ chindhi sarvajñastvaṃ pitāmaha..6..
Sever this doubt of mine, for you are omniscient, O grandfather.
2.9.2.17
skanda uvāca ..
Skanda said:
2.9.2.18
evaṃ dharmmātmanā tena pṛṣṭaḥ śāntanavo mune..
When questioned thus by that righteous soul, O sage, the son of Śaṃtanu,
2.9.2.19
kiñcijjahāsa vīkṣyaiva śrīkṛṣṇa mukhapaṅkajam .. 7 ..
glanced at the lotus-face of Śrī Kṛṣṇa and smiled slightly.
2.9.2.20
dṛśā sa preritastena naranārāyaṇoditam ..
Impelled by his gaze, he spoke to him of what was proclaimed by Nara and Nārāyaṇa,
2.9.2.21
śrīvāsudevamāhātmyaṃ pituḥ śrutamuvāca tam .. 8 ..
the māhātmya of Śrī Vāsudeva which he had heard from his father.
2.9.2.22
tataḥ śrutvā nāradopi kurukṣetraṃ gataḥ punaḥ ..
Then, having heard it, Nārada also went back to Kurukṣetra;
2.9.2.23
kailāsa etya tatprāha pitaraṃ me sa cāpi mām .. 9 ..
and having arrived at Kailāsa, he told it to my father, and he in turn to me.
2.9.2.24
tatte'haṃ saṃpravakṣyāmi niśchadma paripṛcchate ..
I shall relate that to you who question me without deceit,
2.9.2.25
mahāsadasi nirṇītaṃ munivaryā'pasaṃśayam..2.9.2.10..
which was determined in the great assembly, free of doubt, O best of sages.
2.9.2.26
vāsudevaḥ paraṃ brahma śrīkṛṣṇaḥ puruṣottamaḥ ..
Vāsudeva is the supreme Brahman; Śrī Kṛṣṇa is the Supreme Puruṣa.
2.9.2.27
devo'kāmaiḥ sakāmaiśca pūjyo muktairnarairapi .. 11 ..
He is the God to be worshipped by the desireless and by those with desires, and even by liberated men.
2.9.2.28
dvijātīnāṃ cāśramāṇāṃ strīśūdrādeśca sarvathā ..
By the twice-born, by the āśramas, and in every way by women, Śūdras, and others,
2.9.2.29
svasvadharmaireṣa eva toṣaṇīyosti bhaktitaḥ .. 12 ..
he alone is to be pleased through their respective duties with devotion.
2.9.2.30
tasmātkarmākhilamapi daivaṃ pitryaṃ ca sarvadā ..
Therefore, all action—pertaining to the gods and pertaining to the ancestors—at all times,
2.9.2.31
tatprītyā eva karttavyaṃ vedoktaṃ ca yathocitam .. 13 ..
and whatever is prescribed in the Veda, must be performed properly only for his pleasure.
2.9.2.32
sukhāptaye nṛbhiyadyatkarmā'tra kriyate śubham ..
Whatever auspicious action is performed here by men for the sake of attaining happiness,
2.9.2.33
api svanuṣṭhitaṃ taccetkṛṣṇasaṃbandhavarjitam ..
even if well performed, if devoid of connection to Kṛṣṇa,
2.9.2.34
tadā kṣayiṣṇvalpaphalaṃ jñeyaṃ tacca guṇātmakam.. 14 ..
then it is to be known as perishable, yielding little fruit, and of the nature of the guṇas.
2.9.2.35
phalavaiguṇyakṛttaccā'śubhadeśādiyogataḥ ..
From the conjunction of an inauspicious place and the like, it produces defect in the fruit;
2.9.2.36
bahuvighnaṃ ca tannṝṇāṃ naiva vāñchitasiddhidam .. 15 ..
and beset with many obstacles, it does not at all grant men the attainment of their desires.
2.9.2.37
karmaitadeva śrīkṛṣṇaprīṇanāya kriyeta cet ..
If this very action is performed for the satisfaction of Śrī Kṛṣṇa,
2.9.2.38
tatsaṃbandhena tarhyetadbhavetsarvaṃ hi nirguṇam .. 16 ..
then, through connection with him, all of it becomes indeed beyond the guṇas.
2.9.2.39
svavāñchitādapyadhikaṃ dadāti phalamakṣayam ..
It yields imperishable fruit, even greater than what was desired by oneself;
2.9.2.40
asaddeśādisaṃbandhāttadvaiguṇyabhavenna ca ..17..
and no defect arises in it from association with an improper place or the like.
2.9.2.41
vighnastu kopi brahmarṣe pratāpāccakrapāṇinaḥ ..
Moreover, O brahmin seer, by the majesty of the Discus-bearer, no obstacle
2.9.2.42
tasminna prabhavetkvāpi tatsyādīpsitasiddhidam ..18..
can ever prevail against it; it grants the attainment of desired ends.
2.9.2.43
yadyapyalpaṃ svasukṛtaṃ tathāpi paramātmanaḥ ..
Even if one’s own meritorious deed is small, nonetheless, O brahmin,
2.9.2.44
sākṣātsaṃbandhato brahmanbhavatyeva mahattaram .. 19 ..
through direct connection with the Supreme Self, it becomes truly exceedingly great.
2.9.2.45
yathā sphuliṅgamātropi vanyakāṣṭhaughayogataḥ ..
Just as even a mere spark, through conjunction with a heap of forest wood,
2.9.2.46
anivāryo bhaveddāvastathaitaddhariyogataḥ .. 2.9.2.20 ..
becomes an irresistible conflagration, so does this through connection with Hari.
2.9.2.47
pravṛtte vā nivṛtte vā tasmāddharme sthitairnnaraiḥ ..
Therefore, by men abiding in the path of active engagement or of cessation,
2.9.2.48
upāstavyo vāsudevastatsamyaksiddhimīpsubhiḥ .. 21 ..
desiring the full accomplishment thereof, Vāsudeva must be worshipped.
2.9.2.49
atrāpyudāharantīmamitihāsaṃ purātanam..
In this regard also they cite this ancient history:
2.9.2.50
nāradasya ca saṃvādamṛṣernārāyaṇasya ca .. 22 ..
the conversation between Nārada and the seer Nārāyaṇa.
2.9.2.51
yo vāsudevo bhagavānnityaṃ brahmapure sthitaḥ ..
The Blessed One, Vāsudeva, who dwells eternally in the city of Brahman,
2.9.2.52
dākṣāyaṇyāmāvirāsīddharmāllokahitāya saḥ .. 23 ..
manifested from Dharma through the daughter of Dakṣa for the welfare of the world.
2.9.2.53
kṛte yuge dvijavara purā svāyambhuvāntare ..
In the Kṛta Yuga of old, during the Svāyambhuva period, O best of the twice-born,
2.9.2.54
naro nārāyaṇaśceti dvirūpaḥ prādurāsa saḥ .. 24 ..
he appeared in two forms: Nara and Nārāyaṇa.
2.9.2.55
dharmāśramāttapastaptuṃ kṣemāyaiva nṛṇāṃ bhuvi ..
From the hermitage of Dharma, in order to perform austerity solely for the welfare of men on earth,
2.9.2.56
naranārāyaṇau tau ca badaryāśramamīyatuḥ ..25..
those two, Nara and Nārāyaṇa, went to the hermitage of Badarī.
2.9.2.57
tatrādyau lokanāthau tau kṛśau dhamanisaṃtatau ..
There, the two primordial lords of the world, emaciated and covered in veins,
2.9.2.58
tepāte tejasā svena durnirīkṣyau surairapi .. 26 ..
performed austerity with their own splendor, difficult to behold even by the gods.
2.9.2.59
