Critical Notes on the Mānasāra

v3.c27.1

ON

v3.c27.3

*N.B.—The letters A. B. C. D. etc., in capital, represent the manuscripts as indicated.*

v3.c27.4

*Where there is no separate mention, A stands for both A and F; B for both B and D; G for both G and H; and I for both I and J.*

v3.c27.5

*1, 2, 3, etc. indicate the lines of the chapter.*

v3.c27.6

*(1), (2), following 1, 2, 3, indicate the first note, the second note, and so on under lines 1, 2, 3.*

Chapter I

v3.c27.s1.1

1\. (1) Both I. and D. read लक्षण; the correct reading रक्षण is taken from J.

v3.c27.s1.2

(2) The more grammatical form लयान् is adopted from A; all other manuscripts read the singular form.

v3.c27.s1.3

(3) A. पारि, B. रादि for वारि, and D. भावारिखन्धि for भुवारिवन्हि।

v3.c27.s1.4

2\. (1) B. D. सुरेश्वर, A. स्वरेश्वर for सुरेश्वर।

v3.c27.s1.5

(2) D. मुङ्गार for मुङ्गाव। (3) A. लोल, B. पिताम for लोड।

v3.c27.s1.6

3\. (1) B. D. गङ्गाधरं दृहिणकं जह्नवेक्षणद्र।

v3.c27.s1.7

(2) D. निर्वाणसारदमुकं। (3) J. विविल्लैट्ट for ग्रखिल्लैट्टः।

v3.c27.s1.8

4\. (1) A. यस्यपि, F. यस्वपि। (2) B. D. वस्तुंरं for वास्तुशास्त्रं।

v3.c27.s1.9

(3) B. D. ऋषिपगणानपि वक्ष्यते।

v3.c27.s1.10

(4) All other Mss. except I. read चिह (for चेह) in place of हि, but the meaning of च(=and) is already expressed by अपि preceding it.

v3.c27.s1.11

As *sandhi* is compulsory in compounds, the more grammatical form would be मानसारार्धणा।

v3.c27.s1.12

The second portion of the verse 2 (line 4) presents many difficulties as regards the sense of the comparative use of समस्त and the meanings of the two अपि, if any meanings were intended to be conveyed by these words. समस्त means 'whole', 'complete', 'perfect', and its use in the comparative degree is generally superfluous. But if the first अपि is taken to mean ‘although’, and the second अपि ‘yet’, the purport may be ‘although it was more than complete yet it was noticed....’; we would, however, prefer to construe the verse thus—मुनीन्द्रैर्यद्वास्तुशास्त्रं (चादौ) प्रोक्तं तद् (वास्तुशास्त्रं) मानसारर्षिणा समस्ततरवस्तु (कृत्वा) लक्ष्यते स्म ।

v3.c27.s1.13

In this construction the second अपि, like the following particle हि, must, of course, be taken to have been used in वाक्यालङ्कार, having no special signification; but the first अपि may mean ‘even’ (making it ‘even’ more than complete, *i.e.*, perfect in every possible way).

v3.c27.s1.14

5. (1) D. चादन ।

v3.c27.s1.15

(2) All Mss. read शिल्पं; the emendation is suggested by the name and contents of chapter II.

v3.c27.s1.16

6. (1) I. J. F. प्रकाराणां; the correct reading is suggested by the name given to chapter III in the colophon.

v3.c27.s1.17

(2) The form विधिं, being connected with प्रोक्तं in the passive voice, is grammatically untenable; but this mistake is deliberately repeated several times in this chapter; the emendation विधि: is, therefore, not made. The form प्रोक्तं in all other places also in this chapter must be taken as सामान्ये नपुंसकम् ।

v3.c27.s1.18

10. I. रूप for लम्ब, suggested by all other Mss.

v3.c27.s1.19

13. (1) B. D. प्रस्तार ।

v3.c27.s1.20

(2) The barbarous form कर्मेस्य for कर्मण: is apparently due to the analogy of प्रस्तरस्य. This is intentionally left unemended in order to illustrate the ungrammatical style of the Mānasāra, which is elaborately discussed elsewhere, (*Indian Architecture* by the writer, pp. 199—214).

v3.c27.s1.21

27. The uniformity would require the form तोरणस्य ।

v3.c27.s1.22

29. The discrepancy between the plural form ब्रह्मादीनां and the singular form त्रिमूर्त्ते: should be noticed. J. reads त्रिमूर्ति: ।

v3.c27.s1.23

31. (1) I. जनि काकौ; the emendation जैनिकानां is suggested by the name given in the colophon and opening line of the chapter in question, numbered LV; it is also necessary to make the line symmetrical as well as intelligible, for the word जैनिकाक is meaningless.

v3.c27.s1.24

(2) I. मौलि; the emended form मुनि is suggested by other Mss. as well as the name and contents of the chapter numbered LVII.

v3.c27.s1.25

32. I. J. भित्ति; A. F. पक्ष। The emendation भक्त is suggested by the name and contents of the chapter numbered LIX. The mistake of the manuscripts A. F. is inexplicable, but that of I. J. may be due to carelessness of the copyist. The scripts may, of course, suggest an explanation in both cases.

v3.c27.s1.26

33. The expression तत्तद्वाहन implies the titles of four chapters (LX, LXI, LXII, LXIII), namely, हंसलक्षणम्, गरुडलक्षणम्, वृषfractionलक्षणम्, and सिंहलक्षणम्।

v3.c27.s1.27

34—37. These four lines are based on a hopelessly corrupt manuscript and suggested by the names and contents of the chapters numbered LXIV, LXV, LXVI, LXVII, LXVIII, LXIX. These lines are given within square brackets to indicate that they are not found in the principal manuscripts of the text. No explanation of the loss of these lines in all other Mss. is available, except the possible carelessness of the copyists.

v3.c27.s1.28

39. (1) मानसारार्पणता would be the more grammatical form. The very same irregularity is made in line 4 noticed above, and almost for the same reasons it is left unemended.
(2) A. मुनिनाहृतमा, F. मुनीनां।

v3.c27.s1.29

40. (1) B. D. वरैरपि। (2) B. D. स्वकृतं।

v3.c27.s1.30

*Colophon*—I. J. B. D. संग्रहाध्याय। The emendation, संग्रहनाम, is suggested by the other Mss. and is necessary in order to make all the colophons uniform.

Chapter II

v3.c27.s2.1

1. I. J. शिल्प्योनां । This is due to the confusion between शिल्पि and शिल्पिन, the latter being the correct form.

v3.c27.s2.2

2. B. D. पश्चिमघराद्योशानब्रह्मज्ञेरवलोककृत् ।

v3.c27.s2.3

4. A. F. J. ब्राह्ममयं ।

v3.c27.s2.4

5. I. कर्गे for वर्गे; the additional stroke which turns व into क is apparently due to negligence of the copyist.

v3.c27.s2.5

6. The ungrammatical form नामं (acc. sing.) should be noticed; it is left unemended to illustrate the barbarous Sanskrit of the *Vāstu-śāstra*.

v3.c27.s2.6

The lines 5—10 are missing in J. The line 10 is missing also in I. But it has been preserved in all other Mss. The sense, however, may be deduced even without this line. It is practically impossible, in such cases, to say whether the most original text was with or without a line like this one.

v3.c27.s2.7

11. B. D. पूर्वपादे ।

v3.c27.s2.8

12. The genitive use of उत्तरस्य in the sense of locative should be noticed.

v3.c27.s2.9

One Manu is stated in the *Rāmāyaṇa* (1.5.6) to have been the architect who built the city of Ayodhyā : अयोव्या नाम नगरो तत्रासील्लोक-विश्रुता । मनुना मानवेन्द्रेण या पुरो निर्मिता स्वयम् ॥

v3.c27.s2.10

13. B. D. रुक्तस्य ।

v3.c27.s2.11

16. (1) B. D. मनुरस्य । (2) J. तुर्यंतः ।

v3.c27.s2.12

17. I. पुत्रस्त्वपतिः ।

v3.c27.s2.13

19. I. देव-ऋषेः, cf. I. 4, 39. वर्धकोति (II. 19, 23, 25, 33) and वर्धकिरिति most of the Mss. read the word as वर्धकिः and a few as वर्धकिन् ।

v3.c27.s2.14

22. A. F. omit च and add सं after इति ।

v3.c27.s2.15

23. I. नाम; J. गुरोर्नाम । For वर्धकोति see note under line 19.

v3.c27.s2.16

24. B. D. सूत्रधृक, A. F. सूत्रकृत् ।

v3.c27.s2.17

25. For वर्धकी see note under line 19.

v3.c27.s2.18

28. (1) I. स्थपतिः शास्त्रसर्वज्ञयाः; the emendation suggested by all other Mss. is unavoidably necessary in order to make the line intelligible. (2) A. F. J. सह।

v3.c27.s2.19

29. (1) F. दिष्टे, probably better than शास्त्रदृष्टेन, apparently for शास्त्रादेशेन। (2) B. D. वास्तुशास्त्रं।

v3.c27.s2.20

31. J. तोत्यभि। If नाम is not emended by नाम्ना, it must be preceded by इति धीयते apparently for अभिधीयते।

v3.c27.s2.21

32. (1) I. श्रितञ्य, A. F. सूत्रज्ञः which is better perhaps, but the sense is implied by the following word रेखाज्ञः। The idea contained in the word श्रुतज्ञः which is taken from J., is also suggested by the expression शास्त्रवित्तमः।
(2) B. D. शिल्पिशास्त्रविदुत्तमः। A. F. शिल्पिवित्तमः।

v3.c27.s2.22

33. I. पाच्रितज्ञः; B. D. स्मृतिज्ञः। The emendation follows J. and other Mss.

v3.c27.s2.23

34. (1) I. कर्म विदुश्च; J. कर्म विद्याभ्य; A.F. कर्म विदुश्च। The emendation कर्मवित्तम्यः, suggested by all other Mss. renders the expression more or less intelligible.
(2) D. B. वंधार्थया; F. leaves this word in a lacuna; A. ह(च)पलश्च।
(3) A. स्यूर्दलापरः। The second half of this line presents many difficulties. If बन्धु is read with short उ, the following words would be दया (instead of उदय) and पर (instead of चपर, which is meaningless) and the three words बल, बन्धु and दया would imply some of the qualifications required of the carpenter. And there are parallel passages to support the suggestions. स्थपति is stated to be दृढबन्धुः in the *Vāstuvidyā* (I. 15), but not the तक्षक, whose qualifications are thus described:

v3.c27.s2.24

तक्षणात्स्थूलसूक्ष्माणां तक्षकः स तु कीर्तितः ॥
सूत्त्रकर्मज्ञो गुणी शक्तः सर्वकर्मस्वतन्त्रकः ।
गुरुभक्तः सदाकृष्टः स्थपत्याद्यनुगः सदा ॥ (Ibid. I. 18,19.)
सुशीलश्चतुरो दक्षो शास्त्रज्ञो लोभवर्जितः ।
क्षमावानस्य(वान् स्याद्) द्विजश्चैव सूत्रधारः स उच्यते ॥ (*Śilpadīpaka*, I. 3).
कर्मान्तिकः स्थपतयः पुरुषा यन्त्रकोविदाः ।
तथा वर्धका(क्या)दयश्चैव मार्गिणो वृक्षतक्षकाः ॥ (*Rāmāyaṇa*, II. 80, 2).

v3.c27.s2.25

For similar parallel passages from the *Mahābhārata*, *Vāstuvidyā*, *Śilpadīpaka*, etc., describing the qualifications of स्थपति, वर्धकि and सूत्रग्राहिन्, see the writer's *Dictionary* under Sthapati. See also the writer's translation of the Text.

v3.c27.s2.26

35. This line seems to be quite uncalled for here and has been omitted by all Mss. except I. It does not seem permissible, however, to leave it out of the text. It is, therefore, kept, and by a small emendation, as suggested within brackets, it can be explained in a way.

v3.c27.s2.27

36. (1) I. J. A. F. लोके, the other reading within brakets is suggested by other Mss. but the general obscurity of the line is not removed thereby. (2) J. कुरु for गुरुम् ।

v3.c27.s2.28

38. J. त्रिफलं । The construction of this line as well as the preceding three lines, and the one following, is grammatically untenable; but the general sense of these lines is, however, clear to some extent.

v3.c27.s2.29

39. For शिल्पीनां see note under line 1 above. मानोपकरा without any case ending is used for मानोपहर णम्, and would illustrate the barbarous nature of the text.

v3.c27.s2.30

40. (1) A.J. प्रेक्ष्ये, F. प्रेक्ष्येा, B. प्रेक्ष्य । The word उद्दीक्ष्य, when it has been combined with नयन, bearing no case ending, must be taken as an adj. qualifying परमाणु ; it would be meaningless if it be read as a gerund in ल्यप् form. It must, therefore, be emended either to वोक्ष्यः or वोक्ष्यम् according to the gender of परमाणु । I. uses it in the masculine and A. F. J. take it in the feminine. It is taken here in the neuter, and it thus conforms to the neuter forms तत् and उदाहृतम्, this necessitates the reading उद्दीक्ष्यं । (2) A. F. J. उदाहृता, I. उदाहृत ।

v3.c27.s2.31

41. (1) J. षड्गुणितस्तत्र. More than a dozen authorities will be found quoted in the writer's *Dictionary* under Aṅgula; it is always eight times, not six. It is not clear how and wherefrom this reading is taken by this Ms.

v3.c27.s2.32

(2) A. F. J. स्मृतः, but the other adj. गुणितं has been left in the neuter singular. That such errors are very frequent in the text will be noticed in the following lines also.

v3.c27.s2.33

42. J. पद्भिर्मिलितनानं तत् विना, B. D. तापश्चाकजाय, A. F. चांगुलं तत् ।

v3.c27.s2.34

43. J. B. D. वोक्ष्य ; I. रक्ष or रक्षा in this line, and रिष्ट in the following line; *Suprabhedāgama* (XXX. 3) reads रिक्षा; *Vāstuvidyā* (I. 5) has लिक्षा (long) ; so also the *Matsya-Purāṇa* (258, 18) and the *Siddhānta-śiromaṇi* (p. 52): but the *Bṛihat-Saṁhitā* (58, 12) has लिक्ष (short). But from the reading रिष्टे for लिक्षे, the *Mānasāra* seems to have used the short form लिक्ष ; the gender of the word remains uncertain from these uses. In dictionaries it is used in the feminine gender.

v3.c27.s2.35

44. J. रिष्टे । For parallel passages, see notes under Translation and the writer's *Dictionary* under Aṅgula.

v3.c27.s2.36

47. A. F. यव वोहि; B. D. omit this line. J. reads lines 42—45 between lines 47 and 48.

v3.c27.s2.37

48. J. कनियों; कनिष्ठ must be read in the neuter singular or be compounded with the following words; latter being preferable.

v3.c27.s2.38

50. (1) I. वितस्तियुक्तं, which would not give the usual meaning; the emendation युग्मं is suggested by J. and other Mss.
(2) यधिकम् for यधिकः is another instance of errors committed by ignorant artists attempting to write Sanskrit. स्मृतम् in the next line also illustrates the point.

v3.c27.s2.39

51. हस्त is made masculine in this line, and neuter in the next (52).

v3.c27.s2.40

52. I. गृहम्; the emendation ग्रहः is supported by other Mss. as well as the *Suprabhedāgama*: cf. षड्‌विंशतिधनुर्मष्टिः सप्तविंशत् धनु( र् )ग्रहः । (For context and reference see the writer's *Dictionary* under Aṅgula).

v3.c27.s2.41

53. I. J. रज्जुमेव च कथ्यते for दण्ड [षं?]रज्जुमेवच suggested by the other Mss.

v3.c27.s2.42

Between the lines 53 and 54, all the Mss., except I. and J., include the line घरमान वितस्तेन मानयेच्छिल्पिवित्तमः; A. घर. B. D. रथ । But the sense of this line seems to be expressed by the line 55; besides span would be too small a measure for houses.

v3.c27.s2.43

54. In याने and शयने the locative is used either for genitive as in विमानस्य in the next line, or more properly in place of accusative.

v3.c27.s2.44

57. The expression न मानानां is unintelligible; without the suggested emendation the line would be meaningless.

v3.c27.s2.45

The apparent meaning would be given by an emendation like च मानानि; but in that case तन् and धनुर्ग्रह must be read in the instrumental. The same meaning can, however, be deduced if we read च सर्वेषां in place of न मानानां ।

v3.c27.s2.46

59. A. F. मालको, B. D. मूलकः for मालकः ।

v3.c27.s2.47

63. (1) I. दारु for दारितं । (2) B. D. त्रिकांतं for चतुरश्रतः ।

v3.c27.s2.48

64. I. माजीवं for मं दोषं ।

v3.c27.s2.49

65. (1) A. F. I. J. मध्याङ्गुल, which does not convey a suitable sense; the emendation gives the apparent meaning and seems necessary.
(2) हस्तं seems a better reading.

v3.c27.s2.50

68. मृति, without a case ending cannot be used here. It is also grammatically necessary to read प्रोक्ता ।

v3.c27.s2.51

69. J. शाद for शाता, both of which are almost equally obscure.

v3.c27.s2.52

70. J. शिंशुक, which seems to be a confused reading.

v3.c27.s2.53

72. (1) J. प्राग्वत् for पाश्र्वात् । (2) I. नुग्रह for नाहकम् ।

v3.c27.s2.54

73. B. D. र्वहि, F. वर्चि for वर्जितम् ।

v3.c27.s2.55

75. (1) B. D. J. दैवत्यं । (2) The second portion of this line would be too clumsy without the suggested emendation.

v3.c27.s2.56

79. (1) I. सो स्तितो for स स्थितः । (2) J. करम्बकं for रेखुरं ।

v3.c27.s2.57

80. For सतु all Mss., except I. J., read वस्तु ।

Chapter III

v3.c27.s3.1

1. I. यस्मिन् for second यस्मिन् ।
2. J. प्रोक्तादय ।
3. I. J. यान्यं for यानं ।
4. (1) I. J. घरात् for धरा; the error seems to be due to a slip of pen of the copyists. (2) J. ज्ञातोनि, A. जादोनि. I. ज्ञातिहि, the emendation suggested by the other Mss. seems doubtless.
5. J. वस्तुनि for वास्तूनि ।

v3.c27.s3.2

By some extraordinary and most annoying confusion, which will be seen repeated several times in the text, I. J. read, between lines 6 and 7, first, the lines 15-17 and then lines 30—31. The adjustment is unavoidably necessary, and fortunately it is warranted by the undoubted link of sense, and its correctness is guaranteed by the other Mss.

v3.c27.s3.3

7. A. प्रभां for प्रपां ।
9. (1) I. यांधकरस्य कथं शिल्प शिविका चारितं तथा । J. यथिकस्यन्दनं शिल्पी शिबिकाचारथं तथा ।

v3.c27.s3.4

Neither of these readings bears any sense. The emendation is suggested by the other Mss. and is supported by the contents of the 43rd chapter, which deals with the conveyance.
(2) शिल्प is apparently for शिल्पिन् (vocative).
10. J. सर्वे; सर्वं would certainly give a better meaning.
11. (1) I. च ममबलो for मञ्जलो ।
(2) A. साल, B. फाल for फलक ।
13. (1) A. त्वयिकारंड राशिभिः ।
(2) घरादिभिः is apparently an adjective to चतुर्विधम् and should be in the nominative singular; as it is, it bears no sense.
14. (1) B. बादित् सा ज्ञायते ।

v3.c27.s3.5

From the contents of the first line the expression would appear as बादित्यस्य for बादित्यानां । (2) I. J. read महि (without a case-ending).

v3.c27.s3.6

15. Grammatically it is necessary to read either गन्ध in the accusative plural or स्पृश् in the instrumental plural, the former being certainly better. रस would be more grammatical than रसा।

v3.c27.s3.7

16. (1) As the line stands, परीक्ष्य, without any connection with a nominative, is grammatically a bad form.
(2) I. सुभूनो ।

v3.c27.s3.8

17. B. भूमिः रसैः; the second यसैr is apparently for पमिः or पामिः।

v3.c27.s3.9

19. I. J. ततुम्बर; J. प्रसव ।

v3.c27.s3.10

21. (1) I. J. विस्तारः। (2) I. J. षष्टा; if the reading विस्तारः be preserved, we must read समाधिक्यः, but this construction does not bear a satisfactory meaning. We would read विस्तारादष्टसमाधिक्यं दैर्ध्यं; compare line 24 below. J. leaves out the lines 19-21, and B. 19-22.

v3.c27.s3.11

22. I J. चादिक; the emendation is suggested by the other Mss. compare line 20 above.

v3.c27.s3.12

23. महि is not intended to be read in the neuter because the adjective सम्पदप्रदा is read in the feminine; but the other adjectives are read in the neuter.

v3.c27.s3.13

24. (1) I. मादिकायामतिवेत्। (2) A. युक्त। It should be noticed that the rules of grammar are outrageously violated in this line.

v3.c27.s3.14

25. B. ब्रलवध्यरसा।

v3.c27.s3.15

26. (1) I. पर्से। (2) A. महि for मही. The neuter adjectives qualifying feminine noun in lines 25, 26 as in 21—24, if not in 18—20 and 27-29, should be noticed.

v3.c27.s3.16

27. J. मायतमाधिकम् ।

v3.c27.s3.17

28. I. रविम् for रसम् ।

v3.c27.s3.18

29. I. दस्तु for वस्तु ।

v3.c27.s3.19

30. This line seems to be out of place here.

v3.c27.s3.20

34. (1) I. J. विजां for विशां; the mistake seems due to the carelessness of the copyists.
(2) I. शूद्रैः for शूद्राणां seems to have been prompted by the desire of preserving the metre.
(3) B. प्रागुक्तञ्चशोभयेत्

Chapter IV

v3.c27.s4.1

1. The contents of the chapter necessitate the emendation; there seems to be a confusion between this line and first line of next chapter.

v3.c27.s4.2

3. I. J. चायते for जायते; the emendation is suggested by the other Mss.

v3.c27.s4.3

4. (1) I. वत्तुरङ्ग ।
(2) I. द्विरतं, J. द्विरदं ।
(3) I. वोखारदारतं for साकरदुं । B. D. साकार; A. F. सागर ।

v3.c27.s4.4

5. B. D. किंचित्वूर्व गजादिभिः ।

v3.c27.s4.5

6. I. वाक्ये for चान्ये; the emendation is suggested by all other Mss.

v3.c27.s4.6

8. I. सं *******स्पना for संस्पर्शना ।

v3.c27.s4.7

9. A. F. J. सेशोकः। प्रशोक is the usual form.

v3.c27.s4.8

10. (1) I. J. A. स्रुत apparently for चूत । (2) A. F. B. D. षट् for नृप ।
(3) B. D. समास्थितः । समझला seems to be the correct form.

v3.c27.s4.9

11. The adjectives धवल and others should be read in the feminine.

v3.c27.s4.10

13. I. J. वस्त्रेनी मानवाङ्कलो; B. D. वस्त्रेनी च स्वध्रमः for प्रदक्षिणाकारा वस्त्रेनैः suggested by the other Mss. In order to preserve the sense of lines 13-14, a reading like the one included here is unavoidably necessary. But the second portion of the line 13 remains more or less doubtful.

v3.c27.s4.11

14. (1) I. J. शङ्खलो ।
(2) I. दृष्टिनीरा; J. नोया ; the emendation is suggested by A. F. and the other Mss.

v3.c27.s4.12

15. (1) I. J. वस्त्रोता for रहिता suggested by the other Mss.
(2) I. J. B. D. निष्ठ for निष्क ।

v3.c27.s4.13

16. (1) A. F. I. J. सूक्ष्मसलिला for सूक्तिसिकता । The difficulty of retaining the former reading is that it does not conform to the context, and it does not preserve the sense. For these reasons we have preferred the reading suggested by the other Mss.

v3.c27.s4.14

(2) I. वजा for वर्जा ।
17. (1) B. D. पृथिवींद्रेण शूरैश्च । (2) A. E. वृताः ।

(2) B. D. पंजरयो, A. F. वंमुरवोपनं for मुखोपम ।

(2) Before the last expression there is a lacuna which is common to all the Mss., and might be which filled in by a word like सर्वं ।
(3) A. F. वृथा, B. D. व्यदा for प्रभा ।

36. A. F. स्वयं निर्जेता, I.J. वस्तुदेव स्यानोजिता भवेत् for विधानं तदेवं स्याद्वर्जितम् (suggested by B. D.) whereof ऊर्जित is obviously an incorrect form for वर्जित ।

v3.c27.s4.16

37. A. F. B. D. विवं च । It would have been more appropriate if this line could be read before the preceding one.

v3.c27.s4.17

v3.c27.s4.22

Colophon:—The contents of the chapter necessitate the emendation; there seems to be a confusion between the titles of this chapter and of the next.

Chapter V

v3.c27.s5.1

1. The contents of the chapter necessitate the emendation; there seems to be a confusion between this line and the first line of the proceeding chapter.

v3.c27.s5.2

v3.c27.s5.8

10. A. F. सवृषभान् सर्वान् सांश्वापि, I. J. यानृत्सवृषभात्संवत्सां, which is meaningless. The emendation follows B.

11. B. नासापूरणै ।

v3.c27.s5.10

12. (1) A. F. संदृष्ट । (2) B. omits this line. A. C. F. read the 2nd *pāda* as ध्वलि भूतलांघत; I. J. धववपे.... । Neither ध्वलि nor धववपे is known in dictionary as a Sanskrit word. धवले might keep up the metre, but धूलि would bear some sense; but the meaning of this line as well as that of the preceding and the following is obscure. See notes under Translation.
